Robert Montgomery (born May 21, 1904 in Beacon , New York , † September 27, 1981 in New York City , New York ) was an American actor and director .

Life

Robert Montgomery grew up very wealthy as the son of a New York entrepreneur, but had to discover that after the death of his father, none of the fortune was left for him, so that he had to get by with odd jobs. He tried unsuccessfully as a writer and then as an actor. The director George Cukor discovered him for the stage and eventually for the film. His first MGM film was So This Is College in 1929 . The studio purposefully built him up as a star, and Montgomery quickly starred alongside established female stars. With Joan Crawford he made a total of six films , beginning with Untamed . In Yvonne he could be seen next to Greta Garbo . Norma Shearer has also been his partner in several films, for the first time in The Woman for All . The collaboration with MGM lasted 16 years and was only interrupted by the Second World War . He served in the US Navy in the South Pacific and Europe. After returning from active service, Robert Montgomery also began working as a director. His best-known film as a director is Die Dame im See , a film noir from 1947 that was shot entirely from the hero's perspective with the subjective camera . Montgomery was one of the first Hollywood stars to switch to television. His show Robert Montgomery presents was popular between 1950 and 1957. In 1960 he retired from the film and television business. His daughter, Elizabeth Montgomery, was a popular television actress, and he also had a son. Robert Montgomery died of cancer in 1981 at the age of 77.

Montgomery served as President of the Screen Actors Guild from 1935 to 1938 . The actor was involved in the Republican Party throughout his life . He supported the Republican presidential candidates Thomas E. Dewey and Dwight D. Eisenhower . During his presidency, he was the first official White House media advisor in United States history.
