The 1942 Academy Awards took place on February 26, 1942 at the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles . It was the 14th Annual Academy Awards . In the year of the award, awards are always given to films from the previous year, in this case the films from 1941.

Only a few weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States' entry into World War II , the Academy Awards were initially due to be canceled. Academy President Bette Davis suggested selling tickets for the event and donating the proceeds to the American Red Cross . The event was then finally carried out as an evening dinner without glamorous evening attire.

At the award ceremony, two sisters met for the first time in the Best Actress category : Olivia de Havilland in The Golden Gate and Joan Fontaine in Suspicion .
