W. Howard Greene

William Howard Greene (born August 16, 1895 in River Point, Rhode Island , † February 29, 1956 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American cameraman .

Life

Greene came to film through Technicolor Corporation and was involved in the development of color cinema film from the start. After color film was established, he became a specialist in color photography as chief cameraman and worked with the most famous Hollywood directors of the 1930s. He was nominated several times for the Oscar for best camera and won it in 1943 for The Phantom of the Opera . The films made after the Second World War with the assistance of Greene no longer came close to these successes. His oeuvre comprised around 50 productions up to the mid-1950s.
