Harry Segall

Harry Segall (born April 10, 1892 in Chicago , Illinois , † November 25, 1975 in Woodland Hills , Los Angeles , California ) was an American writer and screenwriter who won the Oscar for best original story in 1942 .

Life

Segall began his career as a screenwriter in the Hollywood film industry on the 1932 directed by William Cameron Menzies horror film Chandu the Magician with Bela Lugosi in the title role . In addition to the templates and scripts for 28 films, he also wrote plays such as Lost Horizons , which was performed 56 times at the St. James Theater on Broadway between October and December 1934 .

He celebrated his greatest success with his play Errtum im Himmel (Heaven Can Wait): For this he won the Oscar for the best original story for the film adaptation under the title Urlaub vom Himmel (1941) by Alexander Hall with Robert Montgomery , Evelyn at the Academy Awards in 1942 Keyes and Claude Rains . In 1947, Hall made a sequel to the film with A Goddess on Earth , this time with Rita Hayworth , Larry Parks and Marc Platt in the lead roles.

Due to the success, there were also later remakes of the material of Heaven Can Wait : On the one hand, in 1978 with the title Heaven should wait by and with Warren Beatty and co-director Buck Henry , with Julie Christie and James Mason in other roles, on the other 2001 under the title once heaven and back by Chris and Paul Weitz with the main actors Chris Rock , Regina King and Chazz Palminteri .
