Evelyn Keyes (born November 20, 1916 in Port Arthur , Texas , † July 4, 2008 in Montecito , California ) was an American actress .

Life

Evelyn Keyes first worked as a dancer and was signed to Hollywood director Cecil B. DeMille when she was 18 . After a few rather insignificant films, Keyes got the role of Scarletts O'Hara's younger sister Suellen in the classic film Gone with the Wind in 1939 . Keyes then signed a contract with Columbia Pictures and played numerous female lead roles in films such as Vacation From Heaven (1941) and The Jazz Singer (1946). In 1955 she starred in Billy Wilder's The 7th Year Itch as a wife going on vacation whose husband almost starts an affair with Marilyn Monroe . From the mid-1950s, she only appeared in front of the camera at irregular intervals.

Evelyn Keyes was married to Barton Bainbridge from 1938, who committed suicide in 1940. From 1943 to 1945 she was married to the director Charles Vidor , then from 1946 to 1950 with John Huston . From 1953 she was in a relationship with the theater producer Michael Todd , who later became Elizabeth Taylor's third husband. Eventually Keyes married band leader Artie Shaw in 1957 . The two separated in the 1970s, the divorce took place in 1985.

In 1977 she published her autobiography Scarlett O'Hara's Younger Sister: My Lively Life In and Out of Hollywood . Keyes died in 2008 at the age of 91 in the last town of Montecito, California.
