The Secret of the Three Sisters (Original title: Ladies in Retirement ) is an American film from 1941. It was produced by Lester Cowan under the direction of Charles Vidor at Columbia Pictures and shot in black and white. The premiere took place in the USA on September 9, 1941.
action
Ellen Creed works as a domestic worker for former British film diva Leonora Fisk. When one day Ellen's very eccentric and somewhat crazy half-sisters Louisa and Emily seek shelter with her, Leonora quickly feels disturbed by them and wants to put her in front of the door. Ellen fears that her sisters would end up in an asylum without her protection and secretly murders Leonora in order to enable her sisters to stay. She removes the body and claims that Leonora has gone away. She now lives with her sisters in the house of the late actress. Only the maid, Lucy, is suspicious. When Leonora's nephew Albert shows up because he hopes to hide with his aunt after a bank robbery, he too becomes suspicious. Together with Lucy he can convict Ellen.
background
The plot of the film is based on the Broadway play of the same name by Reginald Denham and Edward Percy from 1940. This was based on a true story from 1886.
reception
The New York Times described the film as "an exercise in slowly increasing horror" and praised not only the camera work, but also the acting, which would give the film almost all the nuances of horror that the original Broadway piece possesses.
Awards
At the 1942 Academy Awards , Lionel Banks and George Montgomery were nominated for an Oscar in the category of best production design (black and white film) and Morris Stoloff and Ernst Toch in the category of best film music (drama) .
