The banner or flag of Källunge ( Swedish Källungeflöjeln ) comes from the Viking Age (800-1050 AD) Sweden . It was discovered in the middle of the 20th century on the tower of the church in the Gotland town of Källunge .

The ship's flags have the shape of a modified quarter circle and are also known as weather vane. It is one of four large specimens of Viking Age heraldry made of gold-plated metal and therefore preserved , which instead of the well-known dragon heads sat on the fore stems, were removable and survived on church towers. In addition to the large ships' flags, there are also finds of small model-like flags made of bronze, which were found during excavations and in cremation graves.

A rune staff from Bergen in Norway shows the "Laidang" (the fleet), in which only a few ships have a stern decorated with kites or banners. The engraving on the wood indicates that ship flags of the type preserved in Källunge were only allowed to be affixed to ships of important leaders. This is also evident from the legends of Norse literature .

The 30 cm long standard is next to the fully plastic sculpture of a mounted mythical creature on the one hand, two snakes, on the other the image of a lion or the wolf to its neck also, in the typical tendrils technology , overcomes a snake. The offset riveted edge is decorated with plant tendrils and apparently intended for the attachment of a strip of fabric.

The Källunge ship's flag is one of only four metal objects of this type that have survived to this day. In addition to that of Modum-Heggen in Norway , where the remains of a royal court were discovered, and the ship's flag from Söderala in central Sweden, there are also those from the tower of the old church in Tingelstad , also in Norway.

The Källunge ship's flag is in the Gotlands Fornsal Museum in Visby .
