William Holmes
William Jefferson Holmes (born March 17, 1877 in the Bronx , New York City , † December 1, 1946 in Los Angeles ) was an American film editor .
Life
William Holmes gained his first experience in the field of film editing in 1925 as an assistant editor of Fred Niblo's silent film classic Ben Hur . In 1929 he was signed by Warner Brothers , where he henceforth worked with a number of well-known directors, including Mervyn LeRoy , Frank Borzage , Howard Hawks , Raoul Walsh and John Huston . In 1942 he won an Oscar for Best Editing for the biopic Sergeant York, starring Gary Cooper . Other films for which Holmes was used as editor were Victims of a Great Love (1939) with Bette Davis , His last command (1941) with Errol Flynn and Schönste der Stadt (1941) with James Cagney .
Holmes died in Los Angeles in 1946 at the age of 69 and was buried in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale . His wife Iva T. Holmes, whom he married in 1908, was also buried there after her death in 1955.
