Fred Niblo (born January 6, 1874 in York , Nebraska as Frederick Liedtke , † November 11, 1948 in New Orleans ) was an American film director and actor .

life and career

Fred Niblo began his career as a stage actor in vaudeville and toured the world for over two decades. He first came into contact with the film business as an actor during his time in Australia between 1912 and 1915. After returning to the United States, he made his first film as a director in 1916. In his first films he played the leading roles himself or his wife Enid Bennett . Niblo developed a reputation as a specialist in action-packed film spectacles, including the Douglas Fairbanks adventure films The Sign of Zorro (1920) and The Three Musketeers (1921). He reached the peak of his career in 1925 with the legendary film adaptation of Ben Hur , which then set standards in terms of effort. Towards the end of the silent film era, he also made two films with Greta Garbo that advanced her career.

When the sound film was introduced in Hollywood in the late 1920s, the star director was unable to build on his great successes from the silent film era . Niblo retired from directing into private life in 1932, only later, for fun, he sometimes took on smaller film roles as an actor until the 1940s. He was one of the 36 founders of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscar every year . His first marriage was since 1901 with Josephine Cohan, the younger sister of George M. Cohan . Their son was the later screenwriter Fred Niblo junior . After Josephine's untimely death in 1916, Niblo married the Australian actress Enid Bennett , with whom he remained married and had three children until his death in 1948.
