Enid Bennett (1917)

Enid Bennett (born July 15, 1893 in York , Western Australia , † May 14, 1969 in Malibu , California ) was an Australian - American actress of silent films and the early talkies. In total she starred in 52 films between 1916 and 1941.

life and career

Enid Bennett began her acting career on the theater stages in Sydney , where she quickly became a successful actress. Her younger sisters Marjorie Bennett (1896–1982) and Catherine Bennett (1901–1978) also later became actresses. She probably moved to the United States around 1915, where she played a role on Broadway in Cock o 'the Walk between December 1915 and February 1916. In this piece she was discovered by the film producer Thomas H. Ince , who signed her and engaged her for young Hollywood. The good-looking actress quickly got leading roles, for example in the drama The Little Brother (1917). Between 1918 and 1921 she made 23 films alone, which made her a very well-known actress of her time. Alongside Douglas Fairbanks senior , she played the role of Maid Marian in the lavish adventure film Robin Hood in 1922 . With Die Seeteufel Bennett starred two years later in another successful adventure film.

In 1918 Bennett married Fred Niblo , then one of the leading directors in Hollywood. They had three children. This is one of the reasons why Bennett made fewer and fewer films from the mid-1920s. When the talkies began , Bennett usually only took on supporting roles, for example as the mother of child star Jackie Cooper in the Oscar-winning film Skippy (1931). After living withdrawn from the big screen for eight years, Bennett made a comeback in 1939 when she appeared in the drama Intermezzo alongside Ingrid Bergman and Leslie Howard . However, Bennett then only made three more films before finally retiring from the film business in 1941. After the death of her husband Niblo, she married the film director Sidney Franklin in 1963 , with whom she remained married until her death. Enid Bennett died of a heart attack in 1969 at the age of 75.
