Rapper Eminem was the first rapper in history to win the award in the Best Song category with his song "Lose Yourself" from the film 8 Mile . For the first time since the Academy Awards were televised, the winner of that category did not appear on the show as Eminem refused to perform a "defused" version of his song and preferred to stay away from the show.
