Antonia Eugenia "Nia" Vardalos ( Greek : Αντωνία Ευγενία "Νία" Βαρδάλου; born September 24, 1962 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Greek - Canadian actress.

life and work

Vardalos' career as an actress began in 1996 with the film No Experience Necessary . From the end of the 1990s she worked as an actress in numerous television series. She became known for her leading role in the film My Big Fat Greek Wedding , for which she also wrote the autobiographical screenplay. In 2003 she was nominated for an Oscar for the film in the category Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen . She played the lead role in the comedy series of the same name and was also seen in the sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 in 2016. In the comedy Connie and Carla (2004) she played a leading role alongside Toni Collette , and she also wrote the screenplay.

She also wrote the screenplay for the film Larry Crowne (2011) together with Tom Hanks .

Private life

Since 1993 Nia Vardalos was married to the actor Ian Gomez ; In 2018, the couple, who had been separated since the previous year, divorced.
