Caroline Link (born June 2, 1964 in Bad Nauheim ) is a German film director and screenwriter . Her film Nirgendwo in Afrika won an Oscar in 2003.

Life

Caroline Link's mother was an accountant, her father a pub clerk . Among other things, she learned at the Sankt Lioba School in Bad Nauheim. After finishing school, Link spent a year in the USA. In 1984 she then gained technical film experience for a few months during an internship at Bavaria Film in Munich . She studied from 1986 to 1990 at the University of Television and Film Munich in the documentary department and then worked as an assistant director and screenwriter.

In addition to the short film Colorful Flowers (1988), she made the 1989 documentary film Das Glück zum Touch about the disappointing encounter between a Jürgen Drews fan and his idol as a co-director . As a graduation film at the HFF, she presented the feature film Sommertage in 1990 , which tells of the first love of a 16-year-old boy. The film was awarded the Kodak Prize at the Hof Film Festival.

After completing her studies, Link worked as a screenwriter; she wrote two scripts for the crime series Der Fahnder for Bavaria Film . In 1992 she shot Kalle der Träumer for ZDF , a children's film about a lonely boy who dreams of everyday life more beautifully with his blossoming imagination. In the same year she began researching the screenplay for the film Jenseits der Stille , which she presented in 1996 and which subsequently won various prizes (Bavarian Film Prize, Federal Film Prize, German Film Prize, German Video Prize). Jenseits der Stille was also nominated in 1998 as a German contribution for the Oscar in the category of best foreign language film .

After the children's film Pünktchen und Anton (1999, based on a novel by Erich Kästner ), Link's next big box office success was Nirgendwo in Afrika (2001, based on an autobiographical novel by Stefanie Zweig ), which won the 2003 Oscar for best foreign language film. Because her daughter was ill, she was unable to accept the award herself.

In November 2008, her film In Winter A Year , based on a novel by Scott Campbell , was released. Link was able to win Karoline Herfurth , Corinna Harfouch and Josef Bierbichler for her ensemble . This was followed in October 2013 by the road movie Exit Marrakech in which Ulrich Tukur plays a father who follows his 16-year-old son Ben (Samuel Schneider) across Morocco in order to reconcile with him. In December 2018, Links launched the most successful film to date, Der Junge muss auf fresh air , which tells the childhood story of the German entertainer Hape Kerkeling . The film reached over 3.6 million viewers in the German-language theatrical release and was honored with the "Golden Screen", a "Bogey" and a "Lola" for the most popular film in 2018.

Link worked in two films each with the actors Sylvie Testud , Matthias Habich , Hansa Czypionka and Juliane Köhler .

Caroline Link was one of the founding members of the German Film Academy in 2003 . She is a member of the board of trustees of the Children for a better world association . The crew of the film Nowhere in Africa around director Link founded the Mukutani Foundation in order to provide lasting help to the villagers at the location of the film even after the shooting was over. Together with World Vision Germany they built a road to Mukutani . Link also supports World Vision as a prominent child godmother. She has been the patron of the Children's Health Foundation since 2006 .

Link lives with her partner, the director Dominik Graf , and their daughter (* 2002) in Munich. She is evangelical.
