Beyond the Silence is a German film drama from 1996. Directed by Caroline Link .

The film, which is set in contemporary Germany, addresses both the problems of people with disabilities in our society and here especially of the deaf as well as the self-discovery process of a young woman.

action

The film tells the story of Lara, who grows up as the daughter of deaf parents in a small town in southern Germany . Lara herself is hearing and has mastered sign language , which is why she translates for her parents in many situations at a young age. For example, she accompanies them to loan negotiations at the bank and interprets there as well as on parenting days at school, but not always completely truthfully.

For Christmas, Lara receives a clarinet from her aunt Clarissa, who is an enthusiastic musician . Lara discovers the world of music into which her parents cannot follow her. During the following years Lara developed into a talented clarinetist.

After Lara's mother Kai dies after a bicycle accident, Lara's father Martin feels abandoned. When the now 18-year-old Lara also wants to study at a conservatory (music college) in Berlin , the family seems to break up. The end, however, has a conciliatory effect: Lara's father tries to understand the love his daughter feels for music, and Martin and Lara carefully come closer to each other.

Reviews

  • “A successful cinema debut for a graduate of the Munich Film School. The film is convincing both as a sensitive presentation of the problems of the disabled as well as in its universal theme of the self-discovery process of a young woman and the plea for understanding and openness towards incompatible experiences. "( Film-dienst 25/1996)
  • “If you want to find out how loud the snow is and how the tones of the clarinet can enchant people, you shouldn't miss this film: A German production that takes on an unusual topic beyond relationship comedies and the story of saying goodbye to childhood with a quiet Humor and an idiosyncratic aesthetic told. "( Fischer Film Almanach 1997)
  • “A film that turns silence into music and finds its strength in the balance between laughing and crying, joy and pain. 'Jenseits der Stille' is an event among German productions and has an excellent cast. "(Dirk Jasper FilmLexikon)
  • "Thanks to his good cast in all roles, convincing acting performances under secure leadership, an impressive penetration of the world of the deaf succeeds, with all its problems of social integration and family conflicts." (FBW Langfilme)
