Howie Seago (born December 5, 1953 in Seattle , Washington ) is an American actor and theater director.

Life

Howie Seago is deaf from birth and grew up speaking exclusively because his father, also deaf , forbade him to learn sign language . He only came to sign language when he began his studies ( psychology , drama ) at California State University, Northridge , in Los Angeles and joined the theater group there. Seago later became a member of the touring National Theater of the Deaf . It was there that the director Peter Sellars discovered him and five years later hired him for the lead role in his theater production Ajax (1986), which Seago made known beyond the country's borders. In Europe he appeared in roles in “The Forest” (Germany, 1988), “ Die Perser ” ( Salzburg Festival , Edinburgh Festival , 1993), Stravinsky's “Bible Pieces” ( Holland Festival , 1999) as well as in the Oscar-nominated film “ Beyond Silence ” (Germany, 1996). In this one he plays the father of a hearing girl who grows up with deaf parents. In the USA he had other film roles, including in television series.

Seago is committed to the recognition of sign language and the culture of the deaf. On and on stage, Seago works with both deaf and hearing people. In Austria he worked as a director for ARBOS - Society for Music and Theater and as an actor at the Wiener Festwochen . He is intensively involved as an author and teacher in the deaf community. As early as the late 1970s, he was working on the production of the television show "Rainbow's End" for deaf children. For ten years (1998–2008) he managed the “Shared Reading Video Outreach Project” (SRVOP) at the Washington School for the Deaf (WSD), which uses video technology to integrate deaf students into the communication network of educational institutions in Washington state.

Seago has received several awards, including the Helen Hayes Award. He currently works for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF) in Ashland , Oregon . He is married and has two sons.
