Ashland is a small town in the southern US state of Oregon . It is located south of Medford on Interstate 5 in Jackson County near the California border . The city has 19,522 inhabitants on an area of ​​16.83 km².

Ashland has become known beyond the borders due to the Ashland Shakespeare Festival , which takes place every summer , at which the works of Shakespeare and others are performed in cooperation with famous international artists in several associated theaters and stages.

Ashland is home to Southern Oregon University .

Many hiking routes through the Siskiyou Mountains and rafting tours on the Klamath River start in Ashland . The nearby Mount Ashland is an excellent ski area, and the Pacific Crest Trail runs through the neighboring Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument . Due to the large number of forests, the area around Ashland is at great risk of forest fires.

Ashland has well-developed footpaths and bike paths and many parks. In contrast to other places in the area, the cultural offer of the city has a more European character.

According to the 2000 census, 19,522 people lived here; 8,537 households and 4,481 families were counted. The population density was 1.60 inhabitants per km². 9050 residential units were recorded. Of the 8,537 households, 25.3% had children or adolescents living with them. 37.4% were married couples living together, 11.7% were a single mother, and 47.5% were non-families. 33% consisted of single households and 10.9% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.72.

The population was divided into 18.8% under 18 years of age, 17.5% from 18 to 24 years of age, 23.3% from 25 to 44 years of age, 25.5% from 45 to 64 years of age and 14.8% from 65 years of age or older. The mean age ( median ) was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 85.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 82.7 males.

The median income for a household (median) was 32 670  US $ , and the median income for a family $ 49,647. Males had a median income of $ 36,825 and females $ 30,632. The per capita income was $ 21,292. 12.5% ​​of families and 19.6% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In the years 2000 to 2005, primary school enrollment fell by 16%, after which two primary schools were closed within two years: the Briscoe Elementary closed in 2003, the Lincoln Elementary in 2005.
