Don Barclay

Don Barclay , fully Donn Van Tassel Barclay , (born December 26, 1892 in Ashland , Oregon , USA , † October 16, 1975 in Palm Springs , California ) was an American actor . He had in his internationally best-known role Disney - Movie Musical Mary Poppins (1964).

Life

Don Barclay made his film debut in 1915 in a number of slapstick silent film comedies, most notably the "Ambrose" series starring Mack Swain . He also appeared as Keystone Kop in one of these films, Ambrose's Nasty Temper (1915) . After that, however, he concentrated on a stage career and appeared on Broadway in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1916 and 1917. During the 1920s he played mainly on Broadway and was in musicals - comedies and revues such as Go-Go (1923), The Greenwich Village Follies (1924/25), Merry-Go-Round (1927), Nina Rosa (1930 / 31) or Americana (1932).

In 1933 Barclay returned to the film business and worked for Hal Roach for a few months . There he played a number of comical characters in short films such as the chauffeur in Honky Donkey with the little rascals . Countless supporting roles in full-length feature films followed , mostly without a mention in the opening credits or credits. Barclay provided a whole gallery of drunks, but was also used as a taxi driver , reporter , bartender or - as in The Law West of Tombstone (1938) - as a piano player. He had bigger roles in The Falcon's Brother (1942) and in the horror film Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man ( Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man , 1943) alongside Lon Chaney junior , Bela Lugosi and Lionel Atwill .

Starting with Cinderella ( Cinderella , 1950), he voiced a number of cartoon characters in productions by Walt Disney during the 1950s and 60s . In Disney's Mary Poppins ( Mary Poppins , 1964), his last film, he finally played his most famous role today: that of "Mr. Binnacle ”, the assistant to“ Admiral Boom ”.

Don Barclay died at the age of 82 on October 16, 1975 in Palm Springs .
