history
The college was founded in 1872 as the Ashland Academy by the Methodist Episcopal Church in Oregon. After being renamed Ashland College and Ashland College and Normal School , it was officially recognized as a normal school in 1887 . Due to a lack of financial resources, the university was closed in 1890. The reopening of the college in 1895 as Southern Oregon State Normal School was ensured by state funds. In 1904, teaching was discontinued and the university reopened in 1926. After further renaming to Southern Oregon Normal School , Southern Oregon College of Education , Southern Oregon College and Southern Oregon State College , the institution was given its current name in 1997 to accommodate the expansion of the range of courses. It was part of the Oregon University System until it was disbanded in 2015.
