history
The college was founded in 1856 as Monmouth University by the first settlers of the Oregon Trail . In the period that followed, there were seven renaming. In 1865 there was a merger with the Bethel College from Bethel. The new private college was called Christian College . In 1882 the nationalization and conversion into a normal school took place under the name Oregon State Normal School and later Oregon Normal School . There was steady growth over the next few decades, so that the college exceeded 1,000 students in the 1920s. In 1939 it was renamed Oregon College of Education . In the following years the academic program expanded beyond teacher training into the fields of liberal arts and natural sciences. Because of the expanded program, the college was renamed Western Oregon State College in 1977 and was given its current name in 1997.
