Gernot Roll (born April 9, 1939 in Dresden ) is a German cameraman . He has also worked as a director several times since 1995 .

He completed his training from 1953 to 1956 in the DEFA studios in Babelsberg . In 1960 Gernot Roll moved from the GDR to the Federal Republic of Germany and one year later went to Bavaria Film in Munich . So far he has shot around 100 productions there, including over 40 major TV films and TV series. One of his best-known works is the creation of images (the term chosen by Reitz and Roll in the credits) in the film chronicles Heimat - Eine deutsche Chronik and The second home - Chronicle of a youth (films 1 to 5) by Edgar Reitz .

Gernot Roll was one of the founding members of the German Film Academy in 2003 .

He is the father of actor Michael Roll .
