Life

After graduating from high school in Ulm and studying in Munich, Eckhart Schmidt initially worked as a film critic a . a. for the Süddeutsche Zeitung , Film and Bayerischer Rundfunk . In its assessment, to Schmidt's 80th birthday Anke Sterneborg wrote: "The cinema, he has conquered self-taught, modeled on the French colleagues, first as critics including the Süddeutsche Zeitung." . He was one of the first in Germany to write about directors such as Douglas Sirk , Raoul Walsh , Budd Boetticher and Jean-Pierre Melville . In the mid-1960s, Eckhart Schmidt became active as a filmmaker parallel to his journalistic activities. He became part of the New Munich Group around Rudolf Thome , Max Zihlmann and Klaus Lemke , which was looking for an entertainment alternative to the Oberhausen group and the Oberhausen Manifesto , "for a cinema that is wilder and more unbridled and at the same time more open to the public" (Sterneborg ). The first short films were made in the mid-1960s; In 1967 he shot his first feature film with Jet Generation , a portrait of the “swinging Munich” of the sixties. In 1978 he published the punk magazine S! A! U! out, in which u. a. Rainer Werner Fassbinder , Herbert Achternbusch , Werner Schroeter , David Byrne and Patti Smith published.

In his feature films, Schmidt was first inspired by the Neue Deutsche Welle ( Der Fan , Das Gold der Liebe ), then by the melodramas Douglas Sirks ( Das Wunder ) and finally by German romanticism ( Undine , Der Sandmann ). After a seven-year film break, Schmidt then made films in high definition format and the like. a. The first photo vision was released on DVD in 2011 by Jam Entertainment. Schmidt continued his photographic work with works on graffiti art in Los Angeles, which were shown for the first time in Munich in February 2012, and in 2013 with the project A la recherche d'une fille perdue , which was exhibited in Munich and Los Angeles.

Schmidt published the double novel Hotel / Minorella in 2011 , and in 2012 the collection of stories Corridos - Stories , in which Schmidt describes borderline situations in Los Angeles and Mexico from the perspective of club girls . In 2014 Schmidt published a book about today's youth with the title Never alone, forever lonely . In his photography / poetry book Bad Girls Are Good Girls , Schmidt published poetic texts in English, Spanish, Italian and German, combined with photos taken in Rome, Venice , Palermo , Los Angeles and Munich . In 2015, Love And Hate was released in LA with photos and poetry and a lyrical epic entitled The Killing of Jeanny O. , which deals with the background of the murder of Ronnie Chasen.

In 2015/16 Schmidt published the novels Love and Death in the Afternoon and Hollywood Girl . Schmidt has also lived in Rome since 2016 , where he made nine feature films, which he summarized under the title The Roman Cycle, brought to the cinema and published on Blu-ray . In 2017 the volume of poetry Amore verticale was published.

In 2018, the films were from the Roman cycle in Trieste on the Festival I MILLE OCCHI Festival internazionale del cinema e delle arti shown. In the same year, his memoirs were published under the title Keywords and the volume of poetry Pomeriggio a Roma . Also in 2018 - in Rome and in Munich - Schmidt presented films from his Roman Cycle II in cinemas, which were released as Blu-ray boxes in early 2019. "With the silent film First Kiss and so ...
