occupation

Krücke is a German film from 1993 and is based on the children's and youth novel Krücke by Peter Härtling .

action

13-year-old Thomas was separated from his mother at the end of the Second World War . In this case, they wanted to meet his aunt in Vienna, but her house is no longer there. Thomas runs into a leg amputated former Wehrmacht soldier who calls himself a "crutch" and is involved in black market deals. Both find shelter with Bronka, a Jewish friend of Krückes. She persuades Krücke to report Thomas to the Red Cross and return to Germany with him. She herself later emigrated to Palestine with Jewish orphans. After several weeks of transport, Krücke and Thomas land in a cattle wagon in a small town in Swabia, where they find their way back to everyday life until they find out that Thomas' mother is in Munich. Thomas returns to Munich and says goodbye to Krücke. They promise each other that Thomas Krücke will visit more often.

Differences between book and film

The film shortens the emotional relationships between those involved and tries to strongly visualize the horrors of the war in a flashback.

Krücke's relationship with Bronka seems more clichéd. Overall, the woman doesn't appear as strong and confident as in the novel. Krücke also has a girlfriend again shortly after the separation, which makes his feelings for the woman seem weaker.

Awards

Krücke won the Hessian Film Prize , the audience award at the Max Ophüls Festival and several German film awards . The film evaluation board marked the film as "valuable".
