The Robber Hotzenplotz is a German feature film from 2006 . It is based on the children's books Der Räuber Hotzenplotz and Neues vom Räuber Hotzenplotz , the first two books in the Hotzenplotz trilogy by Otfried Preußler . The first book was made into a film in 1974, also under the title The Robber Hotzenplotz . Some of the filming took place in the town of Seßlach and in the Daubaer Schweiz nature reserve . The costumes are by Ursula Welter .

The robber Hotzenplotz is up to mischief somewhere in the Bavarian province. One day he steals Kasperl's grandmother's coffee grinder. Since the dumb sergeant Dimpfelmoser sees little hope of finding the robber, Kasperl and his best friend Seppel decide to track down the robber themselves. With a trick they manage to find the robber's lair, but then they are caught by Hotzenplotz. Hotzenplotz sells Kasperl to the magician Petrosilius Zwackelmann and lets Seppel work for himself in his robber's den. In the meantime, Constable Dimpfelmoser tries to find out more with the help of the fortune teller Mrs. Schlotterbeck. Kasperl discovers a toad in the magician's castle ; in reality it is the enchanted fairy Amaryllis. With Amaryllis' help, Kasperl escapes from the castle and gets the fairy weed with which the fairy can be transformed back. Zwackelmann, who in the meantime has conjured up Seppel and Hotzenplotz and turned the robber into a bullfinch , is conjured up by the converted fairy, along with all of his possessions, and taken with him into the fairy realm. Seppel and Kasperl hand Hotzenplotz over to Sergeant Dimpfelmoser.
Converted back by mistake by the boys, Hotzenplotz escapes and kidnaps the grandmother. Seppel and Kasperl bring a ransom in the form of silver cutlery, but are captured again by Hotzenplotz when they are handed over. While Mrs. Schlotterbeck's dog Wasti (whom she once accidentally bewitched into a crocodile) leads Constable Dimpfelmoser and Mrs. Schlotterbeck to the robber's cave, Kasperl and Seppel manage to outsmart the robber. With the help of Wasti and the fairy Amaryllis they can free themselves. The fairy transforms Wasti back into a dachshund, and the captured robber Hotzenplotz is brought into the village in a triumphal procession.
