Ursula Welter (costume designer)

Ursula "Uschi" Welter ( July 29, 1946 - January 29, 2010 ) was a German costume and set designer .

Life

Ursula Welter already painted costume designs as a little girl. In Kassel she did an apprenticeship as a tailor. At the end of the 1960s she moved to Berlin and studied stage and costume design. She lived in a shared apartment on Wielandstrasse, worked at the Schaubühne on Halleschen Ufer and frequented the “ jungle ” and SO36 . The theater was her great love, her best friend was Frank Herterich.

She became known in 1979 with her work on the film Shadow Limit by Wolf Gremm . In the early 1980s she moved to Munich . Her favorite director was Jo Baier , for whom she worked in 1996 on the production of the television film The Most Beautiful Day in Life . She dressed actors like Monica Bleibtreu , Katharina Thalbach , Barbara Sukowa and Hannah Herzsprung . In addition to her love for her job, she was worried that she would get fewer jobs.

Already seriously ill, she appeared at her friends' openings and premieres. At her request, she ended her hospital stay and died at home on January 29, 2010. In April 2010, Uschi Welter was posthumously nominated for the German Film Prize.
