Jo Baier
Josef-Albert "Jo" Baier (born February 13, 1949 in Munich ) is a German film director and screenwriter .
life and work
Jo Baier studied theater studies, German and American studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1981 he received his doctorate in theater studies. During his studies he worked as a unit manager, sound engineer and camera assistant at Bayerischer Rundfunk . Together with the cameraman Hubertus Meckel , Baier shot more than 60 documentaries for the BR series Unter Unser Himmel from 1976 . The rural and rural environment of his youth is still formative for him today, many of his films are set in Bavaria.
Baier made his debut as a feature film director with the short film Rauhnacht . Numerous films followed, mostly for television. Wrong way about the Lower Bavarian folk poet Emerenz Meier was only cast with amateur actors and was awarded silver with the Adolf Grimme Prize in 1989. Rosse was based on the drama by Richard Billinger . Wildfire with Anica Dobra as Emerenz Meier came to the cinema in 1991. Cover was also the protagonist in Baier's next television film The Most Beautiful Day in Life, based on a book by Ruth Toma .
The three-part television series Der Laden was awarded the Gold Adolf Grimme Prize and the special prize of the Bavarian Television Prize in 1999. Another Grimme Prize was awarded in 2001 for the crime drama Wambo with Jürgen Tarrach , which traces the story of the actor Walter Sedlmayr . In 2002 the homeland film Verlorenes Land followed with Martina Gedeck, Monica Bleibtreu and Nina Kunzendorf and in 2003 Schwabenkinder with Tobias Moretti , Vadim Glowna and Jürgen Tarrach. Stauffenberg with Sebastian Koch as Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg tells the story of the assassination attempt on Hitler on July 20, 1944 and in 2004 received the German Television Award for best film. Michael Degen's memories as a child of Jewish origin who survived in Nazi Germany were filmed by Baier in Not all were murderers with Nadja Uhl and Aaron Altaras . In The Last Piece of Heaven (2007), David Rott and Max von Pufendorf can be seen as an unequal pair of brothers alongside Nora Tschirner . Liesl Karlstadt and Karl Valentin with Johannes Herrschmann , Bettina Redlich and Hannah Herzsprung is a television film about the life and career of the Bavarian comedian couple.
In March 2010, Jo Baier's lavish historical drama Henri 4 was released for the first time since 1991. The international co-production based on the literary model by Heinrich Mann , however, had little success with both critics and audiences. The biographical dialogue drama The End is My Beginning with Bruno Ganz and Erika Pluhar was also shown in the cinema in 2010 .
In the television report My Home - Twice , Baier tells of his youth in Dietramszell and his roots and contrasts this with Konstantin Wecker's story, who grew up in Munich.
Jo Baier lives in Munich, is married and has a son.
