action
The brothers Anno and Julian Wilhelm have to accept their mother's cancer death at the age of five and four, respectively. From then on they have to grow up alone with their tyrannical father in Wuppertal , who is no spiritual support for the children in this difficult situation. Anno copes with the situation quite well, leaves school and moves to Munich as a young adult , where he works as a photographer. With Julian, on the other hand, the early death of his mother left her with emotional damage: he suffers from severe depression with a high risk of suicide . When he wants to jump off a bridge in Wuppertal again, he calls Anno to say goodbye. Anno immediately sets off from Munich to Wuppertal and can just stop Julian from doing what he does. With the words: "I'll take you with me and show you how beautiful life can be" , he lures Julian into the big city.
He lets his brother live with him, shows him the Munich nightlife and lets him take part in his great hobby, gliding . He also introduces him to his crush, Laura Melzer. Julian immediately falls in love with Laura, but cannot express his feelings. Since Anno is also in love with Laura, a certain rivalry develops between the brothers. Laura, on the other hand, makes it clear to Anno that she has no feelings for Julian, which is why Anno should talk his brother out of the idea that a relationship could develop between the two. Anno is not ready for this, however, because he realizes the importance of the friendship with Laura for Julian and that this friendship keeps Julian alive.
On a joint excursion with the gliders, Laura had a serious accident with her sailor. She survived but was in a coma with a traumatic brain injury . Julian wakes up at her bed every night and talks to her, after which her condition stabilizes. After Laura wakes up from her coma, Julian accidentally sees Anno giving Laura a kiss. Then a world collapses in him, he drinks a bottle of vodka, rioted in the hall of his landlord and threatened suicide. Julian is admitted to psychiatry , from where Anno will soon take him out again. After his release, he wants to go back to his parents' house in Wuppertal and phone his father to be picked up from Munich. All attempts by Anno to change his mind fail. It turns out that Julian still hasn't healed. Julian has barely got home when he still jumps off the bridge. Five years later, Anno and Laura are still a couple and at the end of the film you can see them taking off on a long-haul flight together. The fade-in follows: “For Julian. † 2002 " .
