occupation

Die Flambierte Frau is a German feature film by director Robert van Ackeren from 1983. The film describes the development of the relationship between a dominatrix and a call boy . In addition to Gudrun Landgrebe , Mathieu Carrière and Hanns Zischler are also involved. The script is based on the novel of the same name by Wolfgang Fienhold .

action

Eva, who comes from “better circles”, breaks out of boredom and frustration from their relationship and separates from her husband. The idea of working as a call girl seems very tempting to her, so she learns the basics of the trade with the help of her friend Yvonne and is soon working with a select group of customers. After disgusting a client's role-play requests and causing them to swap roles , Eva increasingly discovers the world of BDSM for herself and becomes a successful dominatrix .

In the vicinity of her colleagues, she meets Chris, with whom she falls in love. He turns out to be a gigolo who offers his services to both men and women. She moves in with him in his penthouse , which is big enough to allow both of them to go about their business independently.

When Chris realizes that his girlfriend is very successful as a dominatrix , he becomes increasingly jealous and cannot overcome his aversion to Eva's sadomasochistic services, as he understands these as mere disregard and humiliation of the customers. In return, Eva develops a jealousy of one of her friend's longstanding suitors and lovers, a wealthy art dealer who has loved Chris for a long time and who now has to fear more and more that he will slip away.

In order to finally win his girlfriend over, Chris begins giving Eva pelts and talking about marriage. Eva's relationship to her service remains ambivalent, as she understands femdom as a way to earn a high income and not be at the mercy of her customers sexually, but instead to be able to subordinate and direct them. The couple are increasingly burdened by the ambivalence between Eva's great economic success and the different degrees of amorality of sadomasochistic services as a source of income.

The situation finally escalates when Eva describes her dream of subjugating him and beating her in the process. Chris loses his nerve and subsequently invests in a restaurant purchase, which Eva categorically rejects, against the wishes of both of Eva's assets. In the course of an extreme argument, Chris beats up Eva and sets her on fire after he doused her with alcohol. Burning lights, Eva runs out of the shared penthouse. The film ends with a scene in which Eva and her friend Yvonne are thrown out of a bar owned by Chris; the two women are amused by the situation.

Reviews

“A satirical black comedy that attacks mendacious bourgeois manners and the abuse of feelings. A great box office success for German cinema. "

“Van Ackeren shows prostitution as an acceptable middle-class career. However, his often evoked evil look at the beloved conventions of the bourgeoisie is less likely to have lured the masses into the cinemas than the beautiful images of the milieu and the physical charms of the main actors. "

- Reclams Lexicon of German Films

“The critics spoke euphorically of a 'new image of women in the 80s' that Gudrun Landgrebe embodied: with a cool, controlled demeanor and self-confident, erotic charisma. This image should get stuck in people's heads and 'haunt' them for a long time. "
