action

Berlin 1899: Camilla Hofmann is well protected as the daughter of the chemist and detergent manufacturer Dr. Fritz Hofmann grew up in his parents' villa in Treptow . One day, the German-American Steve Kammer, a trainee in an American detergent factory, comes to visit. He falls in love with Camilla at first sight, and she too is drawn to him.

Camilla's father, actually a good-natured and wise man, is addicted to gambling and the company is on the verge of ruin. The only way out: Camilla is supposed to marry the businessman Alexander Rothe, who is many years her senior, who in return would save the company from ruin. With a heavy heart, Camilla agrees for the sake of the family and the company. However, when Rothe learns how much the company is in debt, he revokes his promise and the engagement and disappears from Berlin. Now the Hofmanns are actually ruined, have to close the company and sell the villa and are left with nothing. Camilla's mother is divorcing her husband, Camilla moves with her father and her aunt Lenka to their holiday home in Warnemünde .

One day Carl Senger, a former employee of the company, visits the Hofmann family in Warnemünde. He plans to re-establish the Hofmann laundry detergent works and can win over Camilla for it. During their negotiations the two fall in love; they get married and soon become parents of little Max. With a lot of dedication they manage to rebuild the company in Neustrelitz . They have another son named Konrad.

At a trade exhibition in Berlin, Camilla meets her childhood sweetheart Steve Kammer, who is now working in the field . He declares his love for her again, but Camilla's love for Carl is greater. She succeeds in hiring a renowned chemist for the company who, together with her father, develops a new type of detergent. This is the final breakthrough for Hofmann. Carl is appointed councilor of commerce and invited to court with Camilla. You can even buy back the Hofmann'sche Villa and move in there.

But despite all the success, Carl and Camilla have drifted apart. Carl feels that Camilla has left out some of his decisions. There is an argument. Camilla goes back to Neustrelitz, Carl stays in Berlin and starts an affair with her sister Lou. When she reveals that she is hoping to marry Carl, he ends the relationship. After many weeks, Carl and Camilla make up again.

Then the First World War breaks out. Carl volunteers immediately, and Camilla now runs the company all by herself. Steve Kammer, who is now in the diplomatic service, enters their life again and they indulge in their old passion.

In 1918 Carl returned home from the war seriously wounded. Camilla insists on taking him home from the hospital . But then he would no longer have the right to an operation by a military doctor. With Steve's help, Camilla makes contact with a doctor who also operates on Carl outside of the hospital. Carl finds it difficult to learn to walk again.

After the war, the Sengers' life soon resumed its normal course. The company is thriving as it was before the war. Max and Konrad grow up to be young men. Max is doing a commercial apprenticeship in his parents' company, and Konrad wants to become an actor. Only Carl is still traumatized. He even wants to get a divorce.

In 1925, Camilla and Steve Kammer met for the last time. Steve now works for the League of Nations . Camilla realizes again that she loves Carl more than Steve. She and Steve say goodbye, and Camilla is determined to fight for their marriage. When she gets home, Carl wants to leave, but Camilla can stop him at the last minute. They marry a second time pro forma and hand over the management of the company to their eldest son Max.

Reviews

“Director Dietmar Klein (...) staged an authentic story based on the best-selling novel by Sandra Paretti (1935–1994) with outstanding actors. A lot of emphasis was placed on decor and costumes. The brilliant pictures often look like well composed paintings. "

"The epic family chronicle and the fate of women beginning at the end of the 19th century."
