Axel Block (born July 13, 1947 in Velbert ) is a German cameraman . Since 1974 Block has worked as a cameraman in more than 100 cinema and television productions, and he also taught image design at various film schools . From 1997 to 2015 he was a professor in the field of "Applied Image Aesthetics" at the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF Munich).

Life

Axel Block, born in Velbert, was an avid amateur filmmaker at the age of 13 . After graduating from school, Block initially trained as a photographer before beginning his studies in 1968 at the newly founded University of Television and Film in Munich. There he studied directing , but was already employed as a cameraman during his studies due to his knowledge of photography.

After completing his studies, Block initially worked as a unit manager and assistant director before finally opting for the role of cameraman in 1974 for the television film No Reason for Unrest produced by WDR . In the following years Block worked mainly for television, including on Ilse Hofmann's film adaptation of the novel When Hitler stole the pink rabbit and on the television series Aufachse . In 1981 he was responsible for creating images for the crime scene crime film Duisburg-Ruhrort , the first appearance by Chief Detective Horst Schimanski . Axel Block was also involved as a cameraman in six other Schimanski crime scenes , the Schimanski movie Zabou from 1987 and in three episodes of the Schimanski series in the late 1990s .

Since the early 1980s, Block was increasingly involved in cinema productions. His best-known works include Ingemo Engström's adaptation of Klaus Mann's novel Flucht in den Norden (1986), Thomas Brasch's The Passenger - Welcome to Germany (1988), the comedy Go Trabi Go (1991), Bernhard Sinkel's Der Kinoerzähler (1993) and Margarethe von Trotta's films I am the other (2006) and Vision - From the life of Hildegard von Bingen (2009). For the camera work in the documentary American Beauty Ltd. Axel Block received the Federal Film Prize and the Bavarian Film Prize in 1990 . After Block had already won the German Camera Prize in 1984 , he was awarded the honorary prize for his life's work in 2011.

In addition to his freelance work as a cameraman, Axel Block has been a lecturer since 1975 . He taught at the HFF Munich, the German Film and Television Academy Berlin , the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and the Cologne Academy of Media Arts . From 1994 to 1997 he was a professor at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences. In 1997, Block returned to the HFF Munich as a professor of applied aesthetics, image design and camera technology, and since then has held the chair in the field of "applied image aesthetics".

Axel Block is a member of the German Film Academy .
