Peter F. Bringmann (born August 1, 1946 in Hanover ) is a German film director .

Life

After studying film directing at the University of Television and Film Munich (HFF), Bringmann initially worked as an assistant director and production manager. In 1973, together with other HFF graduates, he developed the screenplay No reason for unrest , which he directed in 1974 for WDR Cologne. At WDR there was a collaboration with the screenwriter Matthias Seelig , with whom he developed film material for decades. In search of a director for Matthias Seelig's book Auffrage zum Tanz , WDR Bringmann took over the direction; the main role was played by Marius Müller-Westernhagen . Then Bringmann shot the television film Paul returns with Tilo Prückner and Manfred Krug , again written by Matthias Seelig.

Bringmann had his breakthrough with the television film The Day Elvis Came to Bremerhaven . Horst Königstein wrote the script for this film, which was first broadcast on ARD in 1979 . Bringmann's film Theo Against the Rest of the World became the greatest German box office success of the cinema year in 1980 with Müller-Westernhagen in the title role. However, comparable successes should not materialize in the following years. The music film The Heartbreakers from 1982 remained rather modest commercially, but it was successful with The Snowman (1984). In 1985 the successful television thriller Gambit (two-part), which was only broadcast in 1987 after some quarrels, followed , whereas African Timber (1989), for the first time without Matthias Seelig, was not a commercial success.

In 1992 Bringmann tried together with Götz George with the series Morlock to establish a successor for George's figure of Horst Schimanski . The series Morlock , the first part of which Bringmann directed himself, had little success and was canceled after four episodes. The next project, the science fiction film Die Sturzflieger from 1995, again based on a screenplay by Matthias Seelig, was also not a commercial success. Then Bringmann continued shooting for television, including the successful three-part family series Father Against Will (1995) with Christian Quadflieg and Suzanne von Borsody . The successful new series A strong team (1999) with Maja Maranow and Florian Martens in the leading roles repeatedly brought higher ratings on television.

To this day, Peter F. Bringmann has worked primarily as a director of television films and series such as Ein starkes Team and Wilsberg . He worked as an author for the animated series The Adventures of the Mouse on Mars .

Bringmann retired on December 6, 2012 after 22 years of teaching in feature film directing at the Art Academy for Media in Cologne .
