action

The successful conductor Max Oldendorf takes over the Süddeutsche Symphoniker, whose chief conductor died shortly before of a heart attack. He gets a visit from his ex-wife Ingrid Bach. She is a paleontologist and got a research assignment in the Andes; Max should therefore take in their three daughters Gitti, Beatrice and Marlene. Reluctantly, he does so. So he has to free his daughter Marlene from a sect, Bea has to assert herself with her wish to give up her medical studies in favor of a career as a paramedic and Gitti's kidney collapse brings Max and Ingrid closer together again.

Oldendorf later met the American soprano Helen Hunter. The two become a couple; and she brings her two adoptive sons Henry and William into the relationship. Among other things, the custody battle brought about by Williams’s biological mother, Henry’s attempts with drugs and Henry and William’s escape attempt when they both think Max wanted to send them to boarding school have to be dealt with.
