action

The management of the Berlin department store Mercato played badly to his electrician Dieter Barneck. He had to continue his twenty-year activity as caretaker of the department store as a self-employed person, for which he had to go into debt. The management recently informed Barneck that the cooperation would not be continued and that another company would be entrusted with looking after the property. Barneck, who is about to leave his home with his family due to a foreclosure, is called to the department store by his colleague Ilse Tobien on one of his last working days because the money counting machine is on strike. As Barneck is repairing it, an armed and masked man appears who steals the daily income. When Ilse Tobien triggers the alarm, the trembling perpetrator shoots her and takes Barneck hostage on his escape from the building. Ritter and Stark learn from the administrative manager Richard Domke that daily income of 1.86 million euros was stolen, the sum was so high because the department store is currently selling its anniversary. The officers learned from the deputy managing director Jürgen Riedel that the counting machine had already failed last week. Ritter and Stark continue to ask Riedel about his behavior during the attack, Riedel states that he wanted to dissuade Ilse Tobien from pressing the alarm button, but this was obviously what made the perpetrator aware of the button.

Shortly thereafter, Dieter Barneck was found slightly injured in the department store's boiler room. He says that the perpetrator escaped over the roof. The officials observe how Domke thanks Barneck, but informs him that he cannot undo the termination; it lies in Riedel's area of responsibility. Barneck reports to officers that he was knocked down by the perpetrator; he rules out that the perpetrator could have followed him into the checkout room. When asked about his resignation, he tells Ritter and Stark that he already has a new job so that it does not affect him financially; He hides his money problems from the officials. The next morning the officers have the overalls and mask examined that the perpetrator left on the roof of the department store; In addition, all robbers with a relevant criminal record who were currently at liberty will be checked. Ritter and Stark also find out that Barneck has to move from his single-family home to a prefabricated building in the east. The officers also learn from Lutz Weber that the money counting device must obviously have been professionally manipulated, so the breakdown of the device and Barneck's appearance there before the attack were no coincidence. Weber can find a witness who saw that the robber escaped from the roof without prey. Ritter and Stark then go to Barneck, who has just cleared his house with his family, and take him to the station; they are watched by strangers who are tailing Barneck. The officials hold against Barneck that his master key had been copied, that he had manipulated the machine and was in financial difficulties; Barneck denies any involvement, he only got the key from Riedel a few days ago. Meanwhile, the strangers take Barneck's wife and daughter into their power.

Ritter and Stark drive to Barneck's new apartment to look for the loot there, but learn from a neighbor that his wife and daughter Barneck have gone with a stranger. When they learned from Weber that Barneck owed € 192,000 and also a criminally convicted robber named Rico Stachowiak, who has been shaking like the perpetrator of the department store robbery during his robberies, has recently returned to Berlin, Knight Barneck takes another look. Barneck denies everything, even though the perpetrator entered the checkout room with his code number. However, when Ritter tells him that Stachowiak has obviously left their new apartment with Barneck's family, Barneck loses his nerve, overpowers Ritter and is able to escape from the police headquarters with him as a hostage. Stark notices his partner's disappearance and realizes that Ritter is in the hands of Barneck. He puts out a manhunt and drives to Barneck's previous house; in front of it stands Ritter’s chariot. Stark calls for reinforcements; meanwhile Ritter tries in vain to persuade Barneck to give up. When Wiegand orders the storming of the house by a SEK against Stark's advice, it turns out that only craftsmen are there; Barneck holds Knight prisoner in an unknown location. From there, Barneck telephones Stachowiak, who demands the money, but believes that Barneck is still in police custody and wants to trick him together with the officers. Ritter tries to win Barneck's trust; he makes it clear to him that he has not trusted anyone since Domke persuaded him to quit and start his own business. Meanwhile, Weber found in the department store that the file with Barneck's security code to the cash register had been opened and then taped again, and he secures the file.

In the evening, Stark drives to Barneck's old company premises and watches Ritter and Barneck through the window. Ritter notices his partner and is able to give him Morse code unnoticed when Barneck and Stachowiak arranged a meeting point over the phone to hand over the money. Stark follows Barneck to the meeting point and calls for reinforcements. Barneck, who has meanwhile released Ritter and is cooperating with him, meets with Stachowiak; Ritter and the arrived Stark secure the area in order to prepare access to Stachowiak. Stachowiak is warned by a stranger and can disarm Stark and Ritter. Stachowiak drives away with Ritter, Barneck and his daughter hostage. Wiegand strongly informs that Stachowiak has an accomplice. He tries to find out from the released Carola Barneck where her husband could have hidden the money. When Barneck, on the orders of Stachowiak, breaks a routine police check in Finow and the officers take up the chase, the gangster drives his hostages into the forest and gets stuck there; meanwhile, Stark and his colleagues learn of the incident. Carola Barneck can then give Stark a reference to a former military airfield near Finow; Her husband often bought utensils there for his hobby. When Stachowiak and his hostages arrive late at the airport, Stark is already there with a SEK. The officers are also watching the second accomplice, who suddenly appears masked at the airport. When Stachowiak receives the money from Barneck and wants to flee, his accomplice wants to run him over with the car so as not to have to share the booty; Stachowiak shoots him. At that moment, the SEK attacks, Stachowiak shoots Barneck down before the officers can shoot him.

The murdered accomplice turns out to be Domke; he had been promised the management of the department store, if he carried out the layoffs, then another manager was put in front of him. He must have met Stachowiak on Mallorca, where he had a holiday home. Ritter and Stark give Barneck, who was only used as a tool by the gangsters, later in the hospital a generous finder's fee with which he can settle his debts.
