Kadir Sözen (* 1964 in Gaziantep , Turkey ) is a freelance radio journalist and filmmaker (producer, screenwriter, director).

life and career

Sözen emigrated to the Federal Republic of Germany in 1969 as the child of a working-class family. He spent his childhood and youth in Mönchengladbach . As a schoolboy he began to be active as a journalist and worked as a freelance writer for WDR - initially for radio. In 1986 he received a scholarship from the Hans Böckler Foundation due to his trade union and political commitment and began studying economics in Cologne, which he graduated with a diploma in 1990.

His work as a freelance journalist and author for numerous radio stations, u. a. WDR, he continued and started in addition to numerous reports and radio features and radio plays to write. In 1990 the Westdeutscher Rundfunk filmed Kadir Sözen's first screenplay, Sehnsucht , directed by Hanno Brühl , about two Turkish youths who grew up in Germany and who - banished to Turkey by their parents - illegally return to Germany.

In addition to the realization of television reports and documentaries that dealt with socio-political phenomena, Sözen was always drawn to the fictional implementation of his topics in feature films. In 1996 he founded the production company Filmfabrik GmbH . Not only do numerous television films, documentaries and feature films from Sözen's pen are made here, but also those of other filmmakers and documentary filmmakers.

Cold Nights was the name of Sözen's first feature film, for which he wrote and directed the script himself. At the film festival in Adana (October 1995), this German production received five of eight prizes awarded: in the categories of camera, director, best film and the special prize of the jury for the performance of the children. This was followed by cinema productions such as Winterblume (1997), Gott ist tot (2003) with Götz George in the lead role and Von Glücklichen Schafen (2014). In God is dead , the film title corresponds to the quote from the film (anti) heroes, it is about the social decline of an unemployed person in Cologne-Ehrenfeld.

Zeit der Wünsche (2005), a two-part TV series thatdealt withthe topic of migration to prime time on German televisionfor the first time, was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize . Takiye - Spur des Terrors (2009), made as a television film for ARD, was also shown in a theatrical version in Turkey and caused heated discussions there even before its premiere. Kadir Sözen, who also provided the script for the film, even received numerous death threats. The film is about Islamist investment funds that are embezzled by fundamentalist groups for their political purposes. Yellow Days (2003), a German-Turkish cinema co-production, was the first film to be shot in Kurdish in Turkey. Immediately after its premiere at the Antalya Film Festival, the film was banned by the Ministry of Culture due to its political pro-Kurdish interpretation. Herbst (2011), a German-Turkish co-production, was nominated for the European Film Prize and was awarded the “CICAE Prix Art & Essai” at the Locarno Film Festival.
