content

Time of Wishes tells the stories of three friends, the young Melike and the boys Mustafa and Kadir, from an Anatolian village, who were recruited as workers by the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1960s . First of all, the three of them still enjoy their youth in the village environment. But when Germany recruited more Turkish workers in the 1960s, Mustafa and Kadir, along with many other young men, left the village because they wanted to earn their money in Germany. On a wishing tree , Melike hangs the wish that Mustafa should return soon to marry her. But Melike waits in vain for several years. When Mustafa wants to return to Melike, his friend Kadir shows up. Due to his rotten teeth, Kadir was not given a work permit for Germany, which is why he is staying there illegally. The authorities are on him and he has to get a new identity. Mustafa gives him money and continues to work for a long time. He writes several letters to Melike, which Yasar, who works in the village post office, secretly lets disappear. When her family insists, Melike marries Yasar, who remained in the village. Mustafa only reappears in the village after their wedding, he sees his hopes for Melike disappointed and travels back to Cologne. After five unhappy years with Melikes with Yasar and two children, Germany has started to recruit more women as migrant workers and Melike goes there alone. The work she is called to do is tough, but the young woman enjoys having shed the shackles of the narrow village and the family. When she accidentally meets Mustafa, now an art photographer, again in Cologne, their long-awaited love finds passionate fulfillment. After Melike's husband and her children traveled to Germany, she initially returned to her old family life, but ultimately remained unhappy in it. When she finally finds out that Yasar has made her and Mustafa's love letters disappear so that she can marry Melike herself, she files for divorce. Yasar returns to Turkey and cuts the wishing tree. On the day Mustafa wants to ask Melike for her hand, Yasar, who has briefly returned from Turkey, shoots Melike. Mustafa finds Melike seriously injured on the street. She dies and is buried in her Anatolian homeland.

Reviews

“With Time of Desires , director Rolf Schübel ('Gloomy Sunday') and author Tevfik Baser take on the history of Turkish guest workers in Germany in an impressive way. [...] An emotional film that should appeal to an audience interested in culture and contemporary history. "

"Authentic and long overdue"
