An amateur film is a film that has been shot by private individuals and is generally not intended for commercial distribution.

definition

Amateur films move on a wide spectrum. Home videos and wedding films are referred to as amateur films, as is the private implementation of self-written scripts in the feature film format of the low-budget sector. Therefore, the authors can even be technically well-versed, because an amateur film is generally understood to be any film that is not supported by a professional production company and therefore has a lower capital . It should be noted that in the public the amateur film is almost exclusively understood as an amateur-produced film that shows no professionalism. That is not really true, since such films can certainly fall under this category, but there are also many examples of films that do not fit this grid. These include films that are made by students at film schools and that may correspond to a high technical level, but are still considered amateur films.

Dimensions and areas of application

In the last few years the community of amateur filmmakers has come closer and closer together with the help of the Internet, and so there are now countless websites of amateur film groups and film enthusiasts. A number of forums and communities related to the topic are also more than popular for exchanging tips and tricks, but also for presenting one's own works to a broader public. The internet video platform YouTube plays a major role here, via which thousands of amateur videos are uploaded and viewed every day. The quality of the films has increased enormously in recent years, which is due to the rapid development of private editing and editing tools .

Some amateur films are still recorded today on 8 or 16 mm films , but the increasing digitization of the video market has made this seldom due to the expense. The majority of the productions are therefore recorded on DV or mini-DV cameras , mainly because the material is easy to process. With digital videos, depending on the desired quality, camera class and storage type can be selected, see video container format .

With the growing spread of camera phones , so does the spread of videos recorded with them, the value of which usually lies in the exclusivity of the recording, which then makes up for the relatively poor technical quality of the recording. This development has given news agencies the advantage of being closer to world political events, as they can quickly distribute the clips they have shot on television and the Internet, for example. For example, recordings of protests in Syria filmed by private individuals on their cell phones are the only media access to the region that keeps foreign press largely out of the country. One example is the iReport platform set up by the American news broadcaster CNN , where every user can immediately upload videos about the latest news via an app and thus make them accessible to the world's population. Cell phone videos of acts of violence, which are particularly popular with young people in socially disadvantaged areas, are criticized.
