Winter lives with her alcoholic mother and her bossy father, with whom she has a submissive relationship.

Shortly after he fled, he met Carolin again - now again as 'Alice'. After that night he continues to pursue her. The trail leads to Casablanca, where he finds it again. After a trip into the desert and a mysterious explosion of the jeep, light slowly shines into the darkness of Carolin's childhood trauma . Everything seems to be going well now, the wedding is being planned. But once again fate strikes.

criticism

"A novel based on the traditional doppelganger motif. The film is just as uninterested in realism as it is in psychological accuracy; Style-conscious and with the courage to exaggerate the staging goes to work, which generates visually beguiling settings. Of course, the film cannot detach itself from the clumsy style of the original. "

“She has proven often enough that von Trotta can produce beautiful pictures, but the protagonists of this family story remain strangely blurry and pale, the director doesn't offer an interior view, the scenes are too schematic. In addition, von Trotta simply packs too many aspects into this story, less would certainly have been more. Some of the attitudes seem overly exaggerated and sometimes borders on involuntary comedy. The acting presence of Katja Riemann [...] is not of much use. However, August Diehl acts convincingly in the role of Robert Fabry - as does Dieter Laser, who plays the silent servant. "
