Granita

Granita (also Granité) is a frozen Sicilian dessert with a sorbet- like consistency.

The term is derived from the Latin granum for grain, which indicates the granular (crystalline) substance of the dessert.

The most common variant is made from sugar syrup and lots of freshly squeezed lemon juice . This mixture is gradually frozen while stirring frequently, creating a granular mass that is served in a goblet with a straw and spoon.

There are also a variety of other variants in which the lemon juice is replaced, for example, with roasted and ground almonds or coffee .

The granita is often consumed with pastries , such as brioches , among other things as a refreshing breakfast on hot summer days.
