The robber Hotzenplotz
The robber Hotzenplotz is a character by the children's book author Otfried Preußler . There are four stories with Hotzenplotz:

Like most of Preussler's works, the first three books were illustrated by the draftsman Franz Josef Tripp ; the fourth volume in the new edition 2018 by Thorsten Saleina . The books have been translated into 34 languages (examples: French: Le Brigand Briquambroque , Italian: Il Brigante Pennastorta , Spanish: El bandido Saltodemata , Turkish: Haydut Haytazot ) and sold over six million times. The first three works were also published as children's radio plays on records , audio cassettes and CDs.
In 2017, a fourth work in the series was discovered in Preussler's estate and erroneously classified as “previously unknown”. After Thienemann-Verlag announced that it would publish Der Räuber Hotzenplotz und die Mondrakete 2018 as a book, originally conceived as a theater play , it turned out that the underlying story, including titles, had already been published several times ( Father Moon may not be sick . Stuttgart 1967; Das large Reader's Digest book for young people 10th Stuttgart 1969).
Emergence
At the beginning of the 1960s, Otfried Preußler had been busy with the first approaches to Krabat for months in vain . Out of disappointment, he decided to write something funny for a change. He decided on a puppet story in which all the characters should appear that belong to a "real" puppet play: Punch, Seppel , the grandmother, the robber , the policeman (here he bears the Bavarian name Alois Dimpfelmoser and another pimple hood ), the magician (Petrosilius Zwackelmann) and others. Preußler named the robber after a city ( Osoblaha ) and a river ( Osobłoga ) in Silesia , both of which bear the German name "Hotzenplotz". This name had made a big impression on Preussler during his childhood and was therefore remembered. The book was published on August 1, 1962.
The first story of the robber Hotzenplotz met with a largely positive response from the readers. Originally Preussler only wanted to write a single book about the robber Hotzenplotz, but after receiving inquiries, requests and detailed suggestions from children for further Hotzenplotz books, seven years after the first part was published, he decided to write another book about the robber compose.
Due to the fact that the dog Wasti, whom the widow Schlotterbeck had accidentally turned into a crocodile, was not turned back at the end of the second volume, Preußler received letters and postcards from readers again after the second part. Thereupon Otfried Preussler wrote another volume in which he was careful not to overlook any open plot. In addition, at the end of the book he explained that it was definitely his last puppet story.
On May 7, 2018, the Thienemann-Esslinger Verlag announced that Preussler's daughter Susanne had discovered a play called The Journey to the Moon in 2017 in the estate of her father, who died in 2013 . The first performance was scheduled for November 2018 in the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus . The work was published in book form under the title The Robber Hotzenplotz and the Moon Rocket at the end of May 2018, 45 years after the previous "Hotzenplotz" title published in 1973.

The robber Hotzenplotz
The cunning robber Hotzenplotz assaults Kasperl's grandmother and steals her coffee grinder, which is of particular value to her because Kasperl and his friend Seppel gave it to her for her birthday. In addition, the coffee grinder can play the grandmother's favorite song “Everything is new in May”. Kasperl and Seppel decide to catch the robber Hotzenplotz because they don't trust Sergeant Alois Dimpfelmoser to do so. To find out where the robber is hiding, they fill a wooden box with sand and write “Beware of gold!” On it. Then they drill a hole in the bottom of the box and close it with a match. After they have brought the box into the forest, the robber Hotzenplotz appears and immediately becomes aware of the box. The two pull out the match and get to safety. Believing that there is gold in the box, the robber drags it into his robber's den. There he discovers the true contents of his prey and the trail that the trickled sand has left to his shelter.
With the rest of the sand from the box, Hotzenplotz spreads a second track that leads to a pitfall next to his robber's den. When Kasperl and Seppel discover the second lead, they decide to separate and run into the robber's trap. While Kasperl falls into the pit, Seppel receives a load of pepper from the robber's pistol. Then the two prisoners of the robber are. Because both have swapped their headgear on the way in order not to be recognized, they are now confused by the robber Hotzenplotz.
Kasperl plays stupid by repeatedly pronouncing Hotzenplotz's name incorrectly. As a result, Hotzenplotz sells him to the magician Petrosilius Zwackelmann for a bag of snuff. He needs a servant to peel potatoes for him, since he cannot pull down the peel by magic. When Kasperl pronounces Zwackelmann's name incorrectly, the magician gets angry, but has the confirmation that his new servant is too stupid to discover his magic secrets. At night, Kasperl tries to escape from the magician's castle, but has to discover that this is not possible because Zwackelmann has banned it. Zwackelmann wakes up, sends Kasperl to bed and threatens to be punished if his night's rest is disturbed again. Meanwhile, Seppel has to work for Hotzenplotz in the robber's lair.
When Zwackelmann visits a friend in Buxtehude and leaves Kasperl alone in the castle, he hears calls for help from the cellar. Punch goes to the cellar down, although signs prohibit on the doors to enter, and discovers in a Unken Pfuhl a toad that dominates the human language. She is the fairy Amaryllis, who was turned into a toad by Zwackelmann and has been imprisoned in the cellar ever since. She asks Kasperl to get fairy weed that grows under an old weather spruce on the Hohe Heide. Then she explains to him how he can break the spell in order to be able to leave the castle: he just has to leave an item of clothing in the castle. Kasperl leaves the Seppelhut behind and sets off for the Hohe Heide. There he has to wait for the moon to rise in order to be able to find the fairy herb because it shimmers silvery in the moonlight.
In the meantime, Zwackelmann has returned from Buxtehude and has to discover that the potatoes have not been peeled and that Kasperl has disappeared. He discovers the Seppelhut and wants to use it to conjure up Kasperl, since this is possible for him from anyone of whom he has anything. However, he does not conjure up Kasperl, whom, like Hotzenplotz, he took for Seppel, but Seppel, the real owner of the hat. He is informed by him about how the mix-up came about. Zwackelmann now wants to conjure up Kasperl with the help of the Kasperlmütze. However, Seppel no longer owns them because Hotzenplotz burned them. Zwackelmann is angry with the robber and conjures him up with the help of his boot, which Seppel is holding in his hand; he was just cleaning it. After an argument, Zwackelmann turns the robber Hotzenplotz into a bullfinch and locks him in a bird cage. He sends Seppel to the kitchen to peel potatoes. Then he sets out to find Kasperl.
Kasperl returns to the castle with the fairy weed. Since this makes him invisible, he can sneak into the cellar unnoticed. By touching the fairy weed, the toad transforms itself back into a fairy. Zwackelmann appears in the vaulted cellar because Kasperl has left the cellar door open and has a fit of rage, whereupon he falls into the pool of doom and dies. As a thank you, Kasperl receives a ring from the fairy with which he has three wishes. He makes his way home with Seppel, and the two of them take Hotzenplotz, who has been transformed into a bullfinch, with them to deliver to Constable Dimpfelmoser. The fairy destroys the castle and returns to the fairy realm.
With the help of the ring, Kasperl not only wishes for the stolen coffee grinder, which now even plays “Everything new in May” with two voices, but also a new Kasperl hat. With the third wish he transforms the Gimpel in Dimpfelmoser's office back into the robber Hotzenplotz. Dimpfelmoser arrests the robber and locks him in the syringe house . Kasperl and Seppel get a reward for catching the robber.
News from the robber Hotzenplotz
The robber Hotzenplotz manages to free himself from the syringe house by pretending to Dimpfelmoser (who has since been promoted to sergeant major) that he has an "appendix dislocation". The robber flees in the policeman's uniform and is initially mistaken for Dimpfelmoser by Kasperl's grandmother. He promptly assaults the old lady. This time he doesn't take anything with him, but eats his fill of bratwurst and sauerkraut, the food she has prepared for Kasperl and Seppel. Dimpfelmoser lies helpless in the syringe house, only clad in underwear, wrapped in a fire hose and with an extinguishing bucket placed over his head. That's why his voice sounds dull and strange when Kasperl and Seppel pass the syringe house and hear his cries for help.
The two do not believe him that he is Dimpfelmoser, and that Hotzenplotz overpowered him. Only when they find out that the grandmother has been attacked by the robber Hotzenplotz do they return to the syringe house and free Dimpfelmoser from his situation. They bring the bared policeman to Grandmother's house in a cucumber barrel and get him his second uniform, which is actually a night out uniform for special occasions. Dimpfelmoser, Kasperl and Seppel want to lure the robber Hotzenplotz into the syringe house with a treasure map in order to lock him up again. But everything turns out differently, because Hotzenplotz saw through the plan. Kasperl and Seppel accidentally knock Dimpfelmoser down and take off his uniform because they think he's Hotzenplotz. The latter takes Kasperl and Seppel by surprise and locks them up in the syringe house. Then Hotzenplotz takes Dimpfelmoser's bike. When Dimpfelmoser regains consciousness, he forgives Kasperl and Seppel for their mistakes. They free themselves again by starting the fire truck and driving it through the wall. Then they go to see their grandmother as quickly as possible because they fear that the robber Hotzenplotz will attack her a third time.
In fact, the robber Hotzenplotz visits his grandmother again - this time to kidnap her and extort a ransom. He takes her to his robber's den, where she has to do the housekeeping for him. Dimpfelmoser, Kasperl and Seppel find a letter in the grandmother's house with the ransom demand, which is as high as the reward that Kasperl and Seppel received for catching the robber. Kasperl and Seppel want to hand over the ransom to Hotzenplotz. But although Hotzenplotz has assured his grandmother that he will be released again when he has received the ransom, Kasperl and Seppel are captured when the ransom is handed over and also taken to the robber's cave. Dimpfelmoser follows the action with the help of the magic crystal ball of the widow Schlotterbeck, a fortune teller. When he hits the table in rage over the audacity of the robber, however, the crystal ball darkens, which cannot stand a shock, and he can no longer follow where Kasperl and Seppel are being taken. Hotzenplotz ties Kasperl and Seppel to a tree to pick red caps (mushrooms).
However, Hotzenplotz did the math without Dimpfelmoser, who goes on a search with Wasti. Wasti is the long-haired dachshund of the widow Schlotterbeck, whom she accidentally turned into a crocodile when she tried her hand at witchcraft. Grandmother has to cook mushroom soup for the robber Hotzenplotz. When Hotzenplotz eats the soup, his three prisoners claim that there are “mushrooms” in the soup that could make the stomach burst. This can only be prevented by tying a rope around your stomach. Hotzenplotz falls for the vertigo and lets himself be tied up. Unfortunately, the three of them can't get the key for their ankle cuffs because Hotzenplotz is carrying the key in his breast pocket, which is covered by his handcuffed hands. Fortunately, Dimpfelmoser appears with Wasti; at the sight of Wasti, Hotzenplotz surrenders immediately and allows Dimpfelmoser to arrest him. Kasperl and Seppel get their money back and lead Hotzenplotz with grandmother, Dimpfelmoser and Wasti past a cheering crowd to the police station. This time Hotzenplotz is not locked in the syringe house, but immediately taken to a safe prison. Grandmother serves bratwurst with sauerkraut for dinner.
Hotzenplotz 3
Hotzenplotz was released early from prison for good conduct and decided to give up his robbery job. He visits Kasperl's grandmother to apologize to her for his actions. Grandmother doesn't trust him, however, outsmarts him and locks him up in her laundry room. Dimpfelmoser, who has meanwhile been promoted to chief sergeant, appears and has to let Hotzenplotz go, as there are no signs of an attack and Hotzenplotz can provide written evidence of his early release. But Dimpfelmoser wants to keep an eye on Hotzenplotz and, together with Kasperl and Seppel, visits the widow Schlotterbeck in order to police Hotzenplotz with the help of her magic crystal ball. You watch how he gets his gunpowder supplies and his weapons out of the robber's lair, but cannot follow the events any further because it is dark.
Dimpfelmoser asks the widow Schlotterbeck to keep watching Hotzenplotz as soon as it gets light again in the morning. Kasperl and Seppel set out the next morning to catch Hotzenplotz, as they already suspect that he is planning new crimes. On the way to his den of robbers they build a trap by hanging a sandbag with a rope from a tree and stretching the end of the rope over the ground so that the sandbag falls down if you run against the rope. When Seppel tries to convince himself that the trap is working properly, the sandbag falls on his head and he lies passed out. Hotzenplotz comes along and ensures that Seppel gets back on his feet with a pinch of snuff.
Finally, Hotzenplotz is able to convince Kasperl and Seppel that he wants to become an honest man by blowing up all of his gunpowder in front of the two of them and then sunk his weapons together with them in the moor. Then the three of them sit around the campfire, enjoy the “robber's feast” prepared by Hotzenplotz and discuss the future of the former robber who doesn't quite know how to shape it yet because he has learned nothing except robbery.
When it is already getting dark again, Kasperl and Seppel make their way home and are accompanied by Hotzenplotz to the outskirts. There the three discover a profile with the current date. Hotzenplotz is accused of breaking into the widow Schlotterbeck's and stealing her crystal ball. Kasperl and Seppel hide Hotzenplotz in their grandmother's house until his innocence is proven. The next day, they visit the widow Schlotterbeck to clarify the case. There they find out that Dimpfelmoser and Wasti, the widow's long-haired dachshund who have been transformed into a crocodile, went in search of Hotzenplotz.
Finally, Kasperl and Seppel find the crystal ball in Wasti's dog house. Apparently Wasti mistook it for a pumpkin. This also explains why grandmother is missing two pumpkins in the garden. These were not stolen by Hotzenplotz, but Kasperl and Seppel took them and gave them Wasti. Little did they know that grandmother counts her pumpkins regularly and that they are special pumpkins that she grows according to a secret recipe. When Kasperl and Seppel want to get Hotzenplotz out of his hiding place, now that his innocence has been proven, the former robber has disappeared and has left a message announcing his intention to emigrate to America.
Kasperl and Seppel want to look for Hotzenplotz, but they need Wasti. So first they look for Dimpfelmoser, who was led into the moor by Wasti, where Hotzenplotz sank his weapons with Kasperl and Seppel. Dimpfelmoser threatens to sink there. Kasperl and Seppel appear just in time and free the policeman from his position. They explain to him that the crystal ball has found itself again and that Hotzenplotz is innocent, send him home and take Wasti with them. Eventually they find Hotzenplotz on the Hohe Heide, where the fairy weed grows, and can persuade him to stay. Wasti sniffs the fairy weed and turns back into a long-haired dachshund. The widow Schlotterbeck then invites everyone to a party and takes a look into the future for Hotzenplotz. She foresees that he will open the inn "Zur Räuberhöhle".
What is remarkable about Hotzenplotz 3 is that Preussler reverses the pattern of the classic robber story and introduces an almost subversive motif with the wrongly suspected person who has to hide from the police .
The robber Hotzenplotz and the moon rocket
The story is located between the first and the second volume. This was stated by Susanne Preußler-Bitsch, daughter of Otfried Preußler, in an interview with the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus in 2018.
Hotzenplotz broke out of the syringe house once more because Sergeant Dimpfelmoser forgot to show the bolt. All newspapers are not yet up to date. Guard Dimpfelmoser immediately imposes an official curfew until the monster is caught again. Seppel and Kasperl are determined to catch him again. Inspired by Seppel's remark that he would shoot Hotzenplotz on the moon, Kasperl developed a plan. They assemble what appears to be a moon rocket from cardboard boxes and adhesive tape and drive it into the forest with a sack and rope on the handcart. They argue demonstratively in order to draw Hotzenplotz's attention to who should fly the rocket to the moon first; this would be made of silver and no one wants to allow the other to do so. As intended, Hotzenplotz becomes aware of her and investigates her behavior, whereupon he wants to force her to shoot the missile with him. Under the pretext of putting on him a space suit and a safety line, Kasperl and Seppel manage to put him in a sack and tie him up. They bring him back to town in the rocket on the handcart, where Sergeant Dimpfelmoser thanks them for their commitment.
Adaptations
Film adaptations
In 1967 the Augsburger Puppenkiste brought the story to the marionette stage and thus onto television. In 1974 Der Räuber Hotzenplotz was filmed under the direction of Gustav Ehmck with Gert Fröbe in the lead role. In 1979 the second part ( Neues vom Räuber Hotzenplotz ) - with a completely new cast - was adapted for the screen. In 1989 "The Robber Hotzenplotz" was filmed by the Shanghai Film Studio in China, directed by Fang Run Nan. It was a Chinese-language puppet film, the title of which is "The Great Robber" (Chin. 大 盗贼). In 2006 Der Räuber Hotzenplotz , this time played by Armin Rohde , found its way onto the screen again under the direction of Gernot Roll .

- The Wuppertal / Wuppertaler Bühnen play showed the robber Hotzenplotz as a family play in the 2017/18 season in the version by director Jean Renshaw and Peter Wallgram.
- The composer Andreas Tarkmann turned the material into a children's opera , which premiered in 2009 under Michael Schmitz-Aufterbeck at the Aachen Theater .
- The group Showcase Beat Le Mot developed a multi-award-winning performance for children from 6 years of age, which premiered in March 2007 in the Berlin Theater an der Parkaue.

radio play
From 1970 six radio plays were published by Karussellverlag on vinyl records, from 1984 on cassettes. Egon L. Frauenberger took on the direction and editing of radio plays . He received the world's first gold record for a radio play (Räuber Hotzenplotz). Speakers included Hans Baur (narrator), Axel Muck (Kasperl), Hans Bergmann (Seppel) and Michael Gahr (robber Hotzenplotz).

planetarium
In 2019 HO3RRAUM Media GbR produced a 360 ° version of Der Räuber Hotzenplotz and the moon rocket especially for planetariums and media domes. Under the direction of Claire Dorweiler, Thorsten Saleina's original book illustrations were rearranged and animated especially for the so-called fulldome format. The story is told in the 50-minute version of the WDR radio play from 2018. It is supplemented by a 7-minute didactic film part on the subject of moon flights , spoken by Felix Vörtler , the voice of constable Dimpfelmoser.
