Live and act

Schmitz-Aufterbeck completed a degree in music and theater studies as well as art history after leaving school . He then worked as a dramaturge and director of the independent theater scene and from 1993 as a dramaturge at the Frankfurt Opera under the direction of Sylvain Cambreling . In 1996 he was appointed chief dramaturge there. After a temporary engagement at the Salzburg Festival , Schmitz-Aufterbeck took over the position of opera director and music theater dramaturg under the direction of Barbara Mundel at the Lucerne Theater in 1999 . In 2005, the Aachen Theater appointed him to succeed Paul Esterházy as general manager and managing director. Under his responsibility, the opera Nijinsky's Diary by Detlev Glanert , in 2009 the children's opera Räuber Hotzenplotz by Andreas Tarkmann and on November 7, 2010 the biblical work An den Wassern zu Babel by Tomasz Man premiered at the Großer Haus des Theater Aachen .

In the meantime Schmitz-Aufterbeck also took on a teaching position at the Institute for Applied Theater Studies at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen and at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . At his various theater stations he worked with well-known directors such as Reinhild Hoffmann , Christoph Marthaler , Peter Mussbach , Herbert Wernicke , Ernst-Theo Richter, Johannes Schütz and Veit Volkert.

In addition to these full-time obligations, Schmitz-Aufterbeck was elected on September 14, 2009 as the successor to Gerd Leo Kuck as spokesman for the Standing Conference of Theater Directors and on November 13, 2009 as a member of the board of the Central Regional Association of the German Stage Association for two years. In his capacity as a functionary as well as in particular as general manager, Schmitz-Aufterbeck is committed to ensuring that the planned cuts, mergers or even closings in the theater area can be prevented or mitigated due to tight budgets in the municipalities. He is also committed to making the programs more attractive for all generations and, as he prompted in Aachen, to bring the theater closer to the citizens through "out-of-home events" such as in individual districts, factories, schools, etc. .

In the 2014 winter semester, Schmitz-Aufterbeck was appointed honorary professor for his 10-year collaboration with the Aachen department of the Cologne University of Music and Dance .
