Barbara Mundel

Barbara Mundel (born January 13, 1959 in Hildesheim ) is a German director . She is the designated director of the Münchner Kammerspiele from the 2020/21 season.

Professional background

After graduating from high school, Barbara Mundel studied modern German literature, art history and theater studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the FU Berlin and the University of Frankfurt am Main. From 1997 to 1985 she was an assistant director at the State Theater in Hanover, parallel to her studies, and from 1986 to 1988 at the Bavarian State Theater . Between 1988 and 1993 she staged her first own productions as a dramaturge and director at the Theater Basel . From 1995 to 1999 she worked as a dramaturge in the management team of the Volksbühne Berlin under Frank Castorf .

From 1999 to 2004 she was director of the Lucerne Theater . She was dubbed the “promised, unloved stranger” . An appointment as artistic director of the Cologne Opera from 2005 failed at the last moment; the then Cologne mayor Fritz Schramma asserted financial reasons. Then she was chief dramaturge at the Münchner Kammerspiele under Frank Baumbauer , and since 2006 she has been the artistic director at the Freiburg Theater . Her contract was extended several times, most recently until summer 2017. After that, at the request of the city, she was to curate the celebration of the city's 900th anniversary in 2020, but the concept she submitted failed in the municipal council.

Mundel works as a dramaturge for the international Ruhrtriennale festival . On September 20, 2018 it was announced that she would succeed Matthias Lilienthal as artistic director of the Münchner Kammerspiele. She will be the first woman in this role at the Münchner Kammerspiele.
