Udo Samel

Udo Samel (born June 25, 1953 in Eitelsbach , today a district of Trier ) is a German actor and has been a member of the Vienna Burgtheater ensemble since 2004 .

Life

Udo Samel learned his trade at the drama school in Frankfurt am Main from 1974 after studying Slavic Studies and Philosophy at the Goethe University in Frankfurt for a year . After his first positions at the Staatstheater Darmstadt and the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, he found his artistic home in 1978 at the Berlin Schaubühne . Here he worked with directors such as Peter Stein , Luc Bondy , Klaus Michael Grüber , Andrzej Wajda , Robert Wilson and Andrea Breth. He remained a permanent member of the ensemble at the Schaubühne until 1992. He did not end his time as a freelance actor until 2001 when he was firmly committed to a theater again : he returned to Frankfurt to the Schauspiel Frankfurt ; there he played the Woyzeck by Georg Büchner (director: Stephane Braunschweig, a takeover of the Residenztheater Munich), in Ibsen's Ghosts the pastor Manders, also directed by Braunschweig, and the father of Henning Mankell's piece Zeit im Dunkel, directed by the author. From 2004 to 2015 Samel was a member of the ensemble of the Vienna Burgtheater , where he had previously appeared.

Udo Samel played in numerous films outside of his theater work. He made his film debut in 1978 in the film Messer im Kopf (director: Reinhard Hauff ). In 1986 he played in the film With My Hot Tears , in which he played the composer Franz Schubert . For this role he received numerous awards. He was also voted best young actor in 1979 and actor of the year in 1991 by the theater magazine Theater heute . In 1994 he made his first guest appearance as Goethe's Torquato Tasso at the Burgtheater in Vienna .

In 1996 Udo Samel staged the opera Wozzeck by Alban Berg at the German National Theater Weimar . This was his first opera direction. Further productions followed at the Bremen Theater on Goetheplatz, at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel / Marstall in Munich and at the Dresden Semperoper . Since 2003 he has directed at the Frankfurt Opera . From 2004 to 2015 Samel was part of the ensemble of the Vienna Burgtheater , where he was particularly successful in productions by Andrea Breth .

Samel was much noticed in 2009 in the title role of King Lear at the Schauspielhaus Graz in the direction of Peter Konwitschny . Konwitschny was able to win Udo Samel as Mephisto 3 years later for his production of Faust at the Schauspielhaus Graz . The premiere took place on December 15, 2012.

The television audience knows Udo Samel through numerous guest roles in crime series ( Tatort , Ein Fall für Zwei ) and through the role of the Jewish businessman Max Salomon in ZDF's six-part transit - the story of a company for which he won the Bavarian TV Prize and the Golden Gong has been awarded. In 2000 he played the role of Mikhail Gorbachev in the two-part docu-drama Deutschlandspiel . Since 2017 he has played an essential role in the TV series Babylon Berlin .

Samel is the narrator of the documentaries The Goebbels Experiment and 14 diaries of the First World War .
