Here he worked with directors such as Peter Stein , Luc Bondy , Klaus Michael Grüber , Andrzej Wajda , Robert Wilson and Andrea Breth. He remained a permanent member of the ensemble at the Schaubühne until 1992. He did not end his time as a freelance actor until 2001 when he was firmly committed to a theater again : he returned to Frankfurt to the Schauspiel Frankfurt ; there he played the Woyzeck by Georg Büchner (director: Stephane Braunschweig, a takeover of the Residenztheater Munich), in Ibsen's Ghosts the pastor Manders, also directed by Braunschweig, and the father of Henning Mankell's piece Zeit im Dunkel, directed by the author. In 1994 he made his first guest appearance as Goethe's Torquato Tasso at the Burgtheater in Vienna .
In 1996 Udo Samel staged the opera Wozzeck by Alban Berg at the German National Theater Weimar . This was his first opera direction. Further productions followed at the Bremen Theater on Goetheplatz, at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel / Marstall in Munich and at the Dresden Semperoper . Since 2003 he has directed at the Frankfurt Opera . From 2004 to 2015 Samel was part of the ensemble of the Vienna Burgtheater , where he was particularly successful in productions by Andrea Breth .
Samel was much noticed in 2009 in the title role of King Lear at the Schauspielhaus Graz in the direction of Peter Konwitschny . Konwitschny was able to win Udo Samel as Mephisto 3 years later for his production of Faust at the Schauspielhaus Graz . The premiere took place on December 15, 2012.
