It premiered on September 29, 2018 at the Zurich Film Festival , and it was released in Swiss cinemas on October 25, 2018. With over 270,000 visitors, the film was the most successful in Switzerland Production 2018. It is the first Swiss production to be shown worldwide on Netflix.

action

The film tells of the young Orthodox Jew Mordechai Wolkenbruch, called Motti, who has always done everything his mum told him to do. Now she wants to pair him up and introduces him to one potential marriage candidate after the other. Then Motti begins to rebel and deviate from his previous life path.

When he falls in love with the non-Jew Laura at the university , his mum is beside herself. She did not include a relationship with a Schickse in Motti's life plan. Motti starts to go his way to self-determination and independence.

Deviations from the original book

  • The plot of the film follows the novel very closely until almost the end; individual dialogues are reproduced almost word for word. The few additional scenes such as the rear-end collision or the bathroom with the father fit harmoniously into the plot; the scriptwriter Meyer's handwriting is recognizable. Motti's father and even the rabbi also seem to show some understanding of the son's rebellion, albeit more non-verbally than with words.
  • One name has been changed: Motti's one-night stand in Tel Aviv is not called Michal as in the book, but Jaël.

The last 20 minutes, however, differ in essential parts from the novel. Several additional scenes result in a completely different conclusion:

  • After his first night with Laura, she goes home with him so that he can introduce her to his parents. The scene in the book with the police officers that the mother called does not occur.
  • After being kicked out of his parents' house, he does not go to Enzo; this and his friend Thorsten do not appear. Instead he goes to Laura. In bed, Laura tells him that she is not ready for a relationship. Motti is devastated. He takes a room in a simple hotel and gets drunk.
  • In the morning his father calls and asks Motti to come home. He and the mother had overreacted a bit and wanted to discuss everything with him in peace.
  • In the park, Motti meets his fellow students Yossi and Michal Süskind, who are currently on a date.
  • Laura calls. The camera zooms out, the credits begin, and the viewer does not find out whether Motti has accepted the call.
  • A scene in the credits shows how relatives from London are suddenly at the door: the mother has already invited the whole mischpoke to the wedding and forgot to inform them that the planned marriage with Michal Süskind will not take place.

reception

Film editor Ann Mayer from Radio SRF Virus gave the film 4 out of 5 points. She found that the film was a classic comedy and therefore fell into familiar patterns every now and then and was also a bit predictable towards the end. With Wolkenbruch, Steiner managed to create a sensitive portrait of an often overlooked parallel world, which at the same time tells a heartwarming and truly whimsical coming-of-age story .
