Danni Lowinski is a German television series about a fictional lawyer of the same name in Cologne who represents “the common people” in her cases. The series ran from 2010 to 2014 on Sat.1 ; Annette Frier plays the leading role . The series was adapted in several countries .

action

season 1

Daniela "Danni" Lowinski is a trained hairdresser who made up the levels at night school, then Jura studied and the second state examination successfully completed. Now she wants to work as a lawyer , but cannot find a job on the highly competitive job market.

After Danni Lowinski received another rejection from a law firm, she opened her own little advice center in a shopping mall in Cologne . For one euro per minute of consultation, she hopes for clients to gain professional experience - true to her motto: “That's the good thing about being poor: you have so little to lose”, she wins her first trial after initial difficulties. With assertiveness and a talent for improvisation, Danni soon fights in court for “little people” who are in trouble. Danni's lack of experience in the legal profession sometimes leads to setbacks and mishaps; through the right intuition and sometimes through luck, however, she also achieves success for her clients.

She is supported by her neighbors in the shopping arcade, with whom she quickly made friends: the Persian Rasoul, who works for a locksmith, the masseur Nils and the barista Bea, who has been Danni's best friend since school. Over time, the three of them become Danni's “staff”, who take on all sorts of henchmen activities for the young lawyer (including taking phone calls because there is no cell phone reception in the shopping center). For this, Danni regularly shares the trio with the fee; the share that everyone receives is negotiated in advance.

Danni sometimes receives well-intentioned advice from the successful lawyer Dr. Oliver Schmidt, who works in a law firm in the same building and always passes Danni's booth on the way from the underground car park to the office. Danni initially thinks he is arrogant and doesn't like him straight away - but over time he wins her sympathy. Danni and Oliver eventually become lovers - with the firm resolve to keep business and private life apart. But when Oliver snatches a very lucrative mandate from her because Danni failed to sign a contract with her client, the disappointed and angry Danni ended the relationship.

Danni lives with her grumpy and not very considerate father Kurt, who is in a wheelchair and only for the football club 1. FC Köln and seems to interest television, in a small apartment in the block -Hochhaussiedlung Kölnberg .

season 2

In the second season, Hannes Stüsser takes on the key service, as Rasoul stays in the USA , where his sister studies and he works in a snack bar. Also new is the security guard Sven Nowak, who often visits the basement on his tours. Nils tries to take the exam to become a naturopath , but has great fear of the exam .

As in the first season, the "staff" now consists of Bea, Nils and the new one, Hannes. The principle of fee-sharing and handyman activities has also been retained.

In private, Danni is still frustrated about the end of her relationship with Schmidt. In revenge, she puts a long scratch on Schmidt's Porsche with her shoe heel, while Sven Nowak is watching her. Schmidt seeks a conversation with Danni and asks her to carry out the mandate taken over from Schmidt in his law firm. Danni refuses, however. Schmidt is with Nina Breuer, who has meanwhile become a judge and also has cases from Danni on the table.

The security guard Sven Nowak and Danni start a relationship. Danni learns from a client that Sven used to be a police officer. Sven also has a photo of a child he claims to be his niece . Sven is reluctant to talk about these two topics in his past and reacts irritably when Danni asks him about them. When Danni, out of curiosity, requests Sven's file and learns that it is with the public prosecutor's office and that it is related to a homicide according to the file number , she confronts Sven. Sven says that he and his former colleague were called to a break-in. After a tour of the house, Sven spoke to the guard over the radio while his colleague looked around the house again. In the house, the colleague surprised the burglar, whereupon the burglar shot him and fled. Investigations were routinely initiated against Sven for this reason, but these were discontinued. Since then, Sven has sometimes taken care of the bereaved widow and her child, as he accuses himself of not having secured his colleague . The use is also the reason why Sven stopped working with the police and doesn't like to talk about it.

At the end of the second season, Oliver and Sven demand that Danni choose between them.

season 3

Danni cannot decide between Oliver and Sven, so Sven quit and now works in Leverkusen. In his place comes Svenja Müller, who ensures that the house rules are strictly observed, but later becomes friends with Danni and her friends. Nils has changed saddles and is now running a junk shop , while Hannes is studying law at the Fernuniversität in Hagen , initially hiding it from Danni.

Bea ends the short love triangle with Hannes and Nils, which the two take to mean that one of them is the problem. When Bea later introduces her new friend Dustin to them, the two are happy for Bea. When Dustin turns out to be a drug dealer, Bea and Danni's friendship is put to the test. In the end, however, Danni can convince her not to go to jail for Dustin. Bea overcomes their separation quickly and often meets with an older, rich man. Hannes and Nils try to make it clear to her that the man is too old for them. After the man did not contact him for days, Bea happened to meet another young woman and break up.

Since Danni is supposed to pay 18,556 euros on the basis of a tax audit , Oliver offers to lend her the money interest-free if Danni cooperates with Oliver's law firm in return. He has realized that Danni is unable to relate, but thinks she is a good lawyer. Danni makes the deal. As a result, she receives several orders from Schmidt's office, but is also often reprimanded by him. In the end, she even gets a process in which she is supposed to represent a large pharmaceutical company. Although she loses it, she receives so much money from the plaintiff out of gratitude that she can pay off her debts.

In private, Danni has a brief relationship with Josh, who works in a sports shop on one of the upper floors of the passage. The winter made the enthusiastic surfer Josh grumpy, so he went to Portugal. Danni cannot come and is initially unsure whether he will come back and whether she would like a relationship with him. Later, she no longer considers another relationship possible.

Oliver wants to marry Elli, who is responsible for the firm's catering. That brings Danni into an emotional conflict: Outwardly she is happy, but in reality she still cannot let go of Oliver.

Season 4

At the beginning of the season, you can see Danni getting married at the registry office. Your partner remains outside the picture. The episode continues by looking back six months earlier. Danni now has her own small office in the Neumarkt-Galerie. When she is looking for a witness for her client Hurricane Topal, who is accused of car theft, Danni gets to know the underworld king "Der Pit". He is so taken with Danni that he chases her from now on, confesses his love to her and tries to win her over with expensive gifts, including a convertible. But Danni feels more drawn to the new prosecutor August von Grün, with whom she starts an affair. When a pregnancy test appears positive, Danni determines from August's reaction that he is not interested in a serious relationship. Meanwhile, Orkan has taken over locksmithing from Hannes, who has decided to study law. After another elevator defect, Kurt messes with the property management and retrospectively reduces the rent considerably. However, this only gives him immediate termination for the shared apartment.

During a visit to her gynecologist, Danni learns that not only is she not pregnant, but that she will never have children of her own. Shortly afterwards, Bea is pregnant. Danni helps Bea to find the right father among three possible candidates. When the two of them discover that his girlfriend is also pregnant by him, they tell him nothing. Instead, Danni proposes to her friend so that she can officially adopt her child. Bea accepts.

Season 5

Danni and Bea are now partnered and now live with Kurt and the newborn child in a row of houses. An employee of Pit seeks advice from Danni in a child visitation case, who thus re-establishes contact with Pit. Pit then helps the Lowinski family in many situations. Danni and Pit fall in love, but this love is suddenly interrupted by Pits' condemnation. In keeping with her principles, Danni had helped the prosecutor to prove Pit had murdered a corrupt police officer. Pit evades prosecution by fleeing abroad, but does not hold anything against Danni, but says goodbye to her.

Bea meets the caring Ansgar and is pregnant again shortly afterwards, but not from Ansgar, but from Dustin. When Kurt accidentally injures himself, Nils discovers that Kurt's nerve pathways in the spinal cord are not completely damaged. He decides to train with Kurt until he can walk again. One day Oliver Schmidt hires Danni as legal advisor in a sexual harassment case against him, which was staged by his law firm colleagues in order to drive him out of the law firm. Due to Oli's ongoing divorce, he is now left with nothing. Complications with running the shopping center mean that Danni loses her shop and has to set up her folding table outside. Since she is now running out of money, she has to work as a hairdresser again for a short time, but Bea can talk her out of this again. Therefore the family is forced to move back to their old apartment in the settlement.

Danni teams up with Oli and works on a case involving product piracy . The parties agree on a settlement with a double-digit million amount, of which Danni will receive two million as a success bonus. Kurt can now take the first steps. Oli is set to be appointed judge while his former lawyer colleagues are exposed to a money laundering matter. Danni rents the now vacant premises and has thus achieved her goal of owning her own law firm with a view of the Rhine.

background

Emergence

The series is based on an idea by the Berlin Authors marc terjung that for Sat.1 in cooperation with Phoenix Film already the legal drama Edel & Starck with Christoph M. Ohrt and Rebecca Immanuel had been designed in the lead roles, which aired between 2002 and 2005 on the transmitter had been. As early as 2005, Terjung studied a series of articles on " discount lawyers" that had been published in various newspapers and online media in the same year and reported on the change in the legal profession. Among other things, young law graduates who were looking for new business models on the job market and who sometimes rented spaces in shopping centers in order to earn money with brief consultations on site spoke up.

In 2007, producer Markus Brunnemann finally proposed to tell of a "lower-class lawyer who is accepted into an upscale law firm". Terjung, who was working on the second season of his series Alone Among Peasants at the time, liked the idea. He varied the basic idea, however, because he found it more interesting "to tell about a woman who just doesn't get the job because of her stable smell". Regardless of that, he had the idea for a supermarket lawyer who would form the character base for Danni Lowinski. Terjung first wrote a test episode and later designed the first series in a group of authors. To do this, he traveled with three colleagues to Thessaloniki , where they extensively revised their individual books.

Terjung and his team originally set Danni Lowinski's framework story in Berlin-Neukölln . When Annette Frier found out shortly before the start of the set construction in Berlin that she was expecting her first child, she initially wanted to cancel her participation in the project. Phoenix Film finally decided to postpone filming for a year in favor of its leading actress. In addition, production was relocated to Cologne in North Rhine-Westphalia , Frier's home and home town, in order to be able to give her more time close to her family, far away from filming times. The change in the main venue had a major impact on the content and language of the scripts, in whose actions not only the family Cologne and Rhenish local color , but also local figureheads such as 1. FC Cologne , football player Lukas Podolski or the Cologne Carnival were repeatedly mentioned.

Danni Lowinski was filmed almost without exception in the Cologne / Bonn region . The first three seasons were created in Studio 10/11 of the Magic Media Company on the Filmcampus Cologne in Hürth-Kalscheuren , where the series was the last remaining production until the location was closed. Later episodes of the series were produced in the studio building of the Coloneum in Cologne-Ossendorf . The outside backdrop of the shopping arcade, in which Danni works as the main character, was taken from the Neumarkt gallery, which opened in October 1998 on the square of the same name in Cologne's Altstadt-Süd district . The interior shots in the basement of the passage were staged in the studio, the structure of which was slightly changed in contrast to the original basement. For example, there are no coin-operated massage chairs in the Neumarkt-Galerie , as can often be seen in the series. The Cologne Higher Regional Court was selected for the exterior and interior shots of the first seasons ; however, in the series this is a district court . The Lowinski family lived in an apartment on the upper floors of the high-rise complex Auf dem Kölnberg in the outer district of Meschenich .

In addition to Annette Frier, her colleagues Nadja Becker , Oliver Fleischer and Axel Siefer appeared in their roles as Bea Flohe, Nils Polgar and Kurt Lowinski in all 65 episodes of the series. Jan Sosniok was part of the main cast of the series for the first three seasons; after a guest appearance in the fourth season, his character of Dr. Oliver Schmidt for the last six episodes of Danni Lowinski added on a recurring basis. Elyas M'Barek was no longer available from the second season due to his numerous film projects; his role as Rasoul Abbassi was written out of the series and replaced by the character Hannes Stüsser played by Tino Mewes . In addition to Mewes, Sebastian Bezzel also joined the cast as security officer Sven Nowak. The shooting for the third season began on September 15, 2011 in Cologne and the surrounding area and lasted until the beginning of March 2012. The shooting of the fourth season extended from August 21, 2012 to March 2013. René Steinke and Dirk Borchardt joined the main cast, while Orhan Müstak replaced Tino Mewes. In the fifth season, Anjorka Strechel added the main cast in the role of "hashtag".

Charisma

The 13 episodes of the first season were shot in 2008, but the start of the series has been postponed several times. Sat.1 finally showed the first eight episodes from April 12 to June 7, 2010 on Mondays at 9.15 p.m. after its second restart of the series The Last Bull . The broadcast was interrupted for four weeks because of the soccer World Cup . The remaining five episodes aired on July 5, 2010. The ratings for the first season averaged 15.2 percent of the market share in the advertising-relevant target group of 14 to 49 year olds, and thus above the Sat.1 channel average at the time. In May 2010, a second season was ordered, which again comprises 13 episodes. This was broadcast again from March 14, 2011 by Sat.1 on the previous slot on Monday evening. Season 2 kicked off on March 14, 2011, with 3.76 million viewers (market share: 11.4 percent) and 2.13 million target group viewers (MA: 15.5 percent), the series' best ratings to date. In mid-January 2011 it was announced that Marc Terjung was no longer available as the lead author for the series. He only wrote two episodes for the second season. The other episodes were taken over by Benedikt Gollhardt as the new lead author, as well as Michel Birbaek , Sarah Augstein and Adrienne Bortoli.

Due to the success of the second season, a third season was shot in the summer of 2011, which was broadcast on Sat.1 on February 6, 2012. The fourth season, which was produced in the second half of 2012, was broadcast from January 21, 2013 to April 22, 2013. The average market shares of the two seasons fell to 12.8 and 12.0 percent market share in the advertising-relevant target group. On April 9, 2013, it was announced that the series would be renewed for a fifth and final season. The season was made available exclusively on the video portal Maxdome before the television broadcast from July 2014 . The broadcast on television began on July 17, 2014 on Sat.1 emotions ; the first broadcast on free TV took place again from July 21, 2014 on Sat.1, where the last episodes of the series were broadcast in double episodes from 8.15 p.m. and only managed to gain single-digit market shares. Regular repetitions and streaming options for Danni Lowinski followed on the sister stations Sat1 Gold , ORF1 and the streaming platforms Joyn and Sky .

reception

criticism

The first season of Danni Lowinski initially met with mixed feedback from critics. The star was in his television criticism ahead of the premiere that the series had potential, but in the end not "entertaining than the court shows by Barbara Salesch and Alexander Hold is". Jens Schröder from Meedia.de compared the production with the ARD series Liebling Kreuzberg and described the series as "proper television". However, the series is "only enough for a halfway entertaining hour of television that will have a hard time against the competition". Kino.de emphasized the performance of the ensemble and wrote: “Around the title heroine, Terjung has gathered some very nicely designed and appropriately embodied characters in the basement […] Well-known directors such as Peter Gersina , Jorgo Papavassiliou and Richard ensure the necessary speed and the right timing Huber ". Odds meter editor Jan Schlueter found that the series offers "funny dialogues" and entertaining entertainment. He found praise in particular for the ensemble, above all Nadja Becker , Axel Siefer and Annette Frier, who here demonstrate their qualities as an excellent character actress. Janina Guthke from Tagesspiegel described Danni Lowinski as a "chunkier version of a working-class Ally McBeal " that could "breathe new life into the recently dusty market for German series". Although the series did not immediately reach the level of Edel & Starck , author Marc Terjung presented "a new, fresh perspective on the legal series".

Later seasons of the TV series received mostly positive reviews. Jakob Bokelmann from Odds Meter found the second season to be a qualitative improvement that met the high expectations and continued to offer fun in an unconventional way. In his criticism of the second season for the Hannoversche Allgemeine Zeitung, journalist Hans Hoff even let himself be carried away to an apology after he had previously criticized the first thirteen episodes of the series in the Süddeutsche Zeitung . In the run-up to the third season, Harald Keller of the Frankfurter Rundschau described the program as an "entertainment series with high standards", the charms of which lay in "carefully researched stories and cheeky motherly jokes as well as discussion bases and food for thought" that the series "in the guise of cheerful entertainment" and present with reference to “current social events”. Carin Pawlak from Focus.de found that the series also offered a lot of verve and wit in later episodes . The audience marveled at Lowinski's “naive cleverness, her cunning wit and her overwhelming fearlessness. This Danni Lowinski works so well because we would all like to be a little more like her. "

Leading actress Annette Frier, who until then had mainly appeared as a comedian in productions such as Switch , Die Wochenshow and Schillerstraße , succeeded with Danni Lowinski in becoming increasingly perceived by the wider public as a serious actress. For her game she won the Bavarian TV Prize , Jupiter and the Golden Nymph of the Festival de Télévision de Monte-Carlo . In addition, Frier was nominated for Bambi , Romy and five times for the German Comedy Prize in the “Best Actress” category, which she won in 2010 and 2014.

Trivia

In an episode of the comedy program Pastewka , the success of Danni Lowinski is discussed. Bastian Pastewka , who plays himself in the series, is jealous of Annette Frier's success and tries to prevent Danni Lowinski from winning the German Comedy Prize. In return, Pastewka can be seen in the episode Gypsy Boy (season 3, episode 1) as a tax auditor.

There is a special reference to the city of Cologne , in which Danni Lowinski plays, among other things in the episode Colonia (season 2, episode 7): Danni represents an administrative clerk and thus sued the mayor of Cologne , who is by an actor and is displayed with a fictitious name. Subsequently, the winged word " Kölscher Klüngel " is used several times . In episode 13, season 4, the Cologne rock singer Jürgen Zeltinger plays the mafioso "de Pläät".

The series The Last Bull was always broadcast on Sat.1 for the first four seasons before Danni Lowinski , i.e. at 8:15 p.m. In episode 12 there, entitled Romeo and Juliet, the fourth season there is a crossover between the two series. Danni rides through a residential area in Essen on her bike in the evening and meets Mick Brisgau and Andreas Kringge, the two main characters of the series. Mick Brisgau introduces Danni Lowinski as his lawyer to his colleague.

Adaptations

Belgium

On March 1, 2012 the Flemish private broadcaster VTM started an adaptation of the series in Dutch with Nathalie Meskens in the lead role. The Flemish version with the title adopted from the original is set in Genk . The plot and characters in the individual episodes largely correspond to the original.

Ukraine

In April 2012, the Ukrainian production company Star Media Film acquired the adaptation rights for the series. Under the title Mascha w zakone (" Mascha's Law") 16 episodes were filmed in Russian with Irina Pegova in the lead role for a Ukrainian and a Russian broadcaster.

Netherlands

On March 20, 2013, a Dutch remake of the series began on the commercial broadcaster SBS 6 , in which Marlijn Weerdenburg played the leading role. The series was produced by Talpa Fictie.

United States

During the first broadcast of the first season on Sat. 1 , SevenOne International , the worldwide program distributor of the ProSiebenSat.1 subsidiary Red Arrow Entertainment Group , presented Danni Lowinski at the international programming fair Mip TV and sold the international production rights for the series to the US American CBS Television Studios . The sale marked the first adaptation of a German television series for the American television market. In the same year, the CBS subsidiary station The CW Television Network ordered an American adaptation. In January 2011, a one-hour pilot was finally produced in which Amanda Walsh took the title role. The film was directed by Richard Shepard . In addition to Walsh, Carla Gallo appeared as Danni's girlfriend and Neal Bledsoe as a young lawyer, and George Dzundza appeared as Danni's father. On May 19, 2011, The CW announced that Danni Lowinski's adaptation had not made it into the US broadcaster's fall 2011 program. CBS then announced that it had commissioned the adaptation of a new pilot episode. This time, too, the series did not make it into the program.

Almost six years later, in November 2017, it was announced that the rights to a US version had been sold to 20th Century Fox Television and Intrigue Entertainment. The script will be developed by NBC and written and executive produced by Ian Brennan .

continuation

In July 2017, at the request of the Kölner Express , Frier confirmed that the series would be continued with a feature film on Sat.1. According to the tabloid, filming for the TV production was originally supposed to start in autumn 2017 before it was postponed to February 2018 for logistical reasons. Even Caroline Frier and Dirk Borchardt confirmed their return to the set of Danni Lowinski . Sat.1, however, told the dpa a little later that negotiations were still in progress, but could not yet confirm the realization of a continuation. In March 2019, Frier said in an interview with the Stuttgarter Nachrichten that a sequel was not planned for the time being. In April 2020 she added in an interview with DWDL.de : "We'd better wait another ten years. Marc Terjung [...] has already wondered whether the story could be continued. But that didn't feel right yet . Maybe also because society has changed so much ".
