High-rise buildings "on the Kölnberg" in Meschenich

Meschenich is a district on the extreme southern edge of the city of Cologne and belongs to the Rodenkirchen district within it .

location

Meschenich borders in the north on the Cologne district of Rondorf and its settlement Höningen , in the east on the Cologne district of Immendorf , in the south on the cities of Brühl and Wesseling and in the west on the city of Hürth .

history

The first signs of settlement are from the Roman period. The first documentary mention of the place as Meschingen comes from 1166.

The Romanesque church of the place was mentioned in the Liber valoris in 1274. Since the Middle Ages, large areas of Meschenich have belonged to various Cologne churches and monasteries, such as the St. Mauritius Monastery , the St. Maria Abbey in the Capitol , the St. Severin Monastery and the Benden monastery in Brühl.

Meschenich was settled along Heeresstrasse, which for a long time gave it the character of a typical street village. In the middle of the 17th century there were only 15 other houses besides the farms and the church. It is worth mentioning the Trenkebergstrasse cemetery with its stone crosses, the war memorial and numerous elements, some of which are listed.

Until the beginning of the 19th century, it belonged to the then independent community of Rodenkirchen . In 1975 Meschenich was incorporated into the city of Cologne.

The center of the village is still the church of St. Blaise . In 1973 the large housing estate on the Kölnberg in the north of Meschenich was built, which represents a counterpoint to the previous development and construction of the rural location. The "Kölnberg" today forms a number of houses with up to 26 floors and a total of over 1300 residential units.

  • Unemployment rate: 14.8% (2014)

traffic

The A 553 motorway ends at Meschenich. An originally planned extension to the A4 was discarded. Therefore, the B 51 , which runs right through Meschenich, and the Brühler Tangente L 150 / Kerkrader Straße (cross connection from the end of the A 553 to the A 555 ) carry the traffic load of the traffic flowing from the A 553 to Cologne or the A 4. Due to the associated burden for the residents, the construction of a bypass road is planned (construction law has been in place since April 2018; the groundbreaking will take place on January 24, 2020); In addition, the B51 is to be relocated and expanded and thus the federal motorway 553 is to be better connected to the Cologne motorway ring via the Cologne- Eifeltor motorway junction .

There are also four bus routes that connect Meschenich with local public transport . Cologne city center can be reached with line 132 via Rondorf , Marienburg and Südstadt or, more quickly, with line 192 and change to regional transport at Hürth-Kalscheuren station . There are also connections to Rodenkirchen with line 135 and to Brühl and Hürth with line 935.

In addition, in a fourth stage of expansion of the north-south light rail system, it is planned to extend light rail line 5 via Rondorf to Meschenich.
