Zollstock borders a total of seven Cologne districts. In the east on Raderberg and Raderthal , in the south on Höningen and Rondorf , in the west on Sülz and Klettenberg and in the north on Neustadt-Süd . Not far from Zollstock lies the Hürth district of Efferen in a south-westerly direction .

The green lung of the district is formed by the Vorgebirgspark in the east and a section of Cologne's green belt in the south . The federal motorway 4 and its junction with the Eifeltor freight station also run along the southern border of the district , and in the north the railway line to the southern bridge.

history

The first historical mention comes from 1877. Previously there were only agricultural fields and a few brickworks in the area of today's part of the city . The name of the district is derived from a smaller customs house (called Zollstock) that stood at the intersection of one of the dirt roads with the Bischofsweg leading around Cologne . As a result of extensive incorporation, Zollstock was awarded to the city of Cologne in April 1888. Until then, the area belonged to the mayor's office of Rondorf .

The first residential houses were built around 1900. However, the district is mainly characterized by the settlements built by the building cooperatives in the architectural styles of the 1920s and 1950s, among others according to plans by Wilhelm Riphahn . These cooperative settlements were also jokingly called "Schutzmannshausen", because initially a disproportionately large number of simple civil servants lived in them with their families.

Zollstock has its own coat of arms, designed by Joseph Rosenzweig (1866–1937), the former rector of the elementary school in Zollstock and founder of the General Citizens' Association Cologne-Zollstock (founded in 1908), and heraldic revised by Robert Steimel . The coat of arms shows a street with a customs house and barrier in the lower part and the three crowns of the Cologne city coat of arms in the upper part .

Several bus lines as well as the tram line 12 of the Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB) connect Zollstock with the neighboring districts and the city center. In the distant future, the railway line, which limits the folding rule in the west, is to be extended by an S-Bahn line. A stopping point for folding rule and the neighboring Klettenberg is planned.

Road traffic

The Köln-Eifeltor junction of the A 4 is located at the southern end of Zollstock . The distribution circle in Marienburg (Cologne) , the end point of the A 555 , is also easy to reach. The B 51 runs through the neighboring Raderthal , which leads from Cologne to Brühl and connects to the A 553 shortly before Brühl .

Public facilities

The Südfriedhof , one of the five large Cologne cemeteries, as well as part of the Cologne green belt and the Cologne goods station Eifeltor are located in the south of the district. At the northern end is the Südstadion with its large sports facility, where the SC Fortuna Cologne venue is located .

There are the following schools in Zollstock:

Before the comprehensive school was founded, there was also a secondary school and a grammar school in Zollstock , but these ended when the comprehensive school started and thus merged with it.

religion

There are two Catholic churches in Zollstock:

  • Sankt Pius am Gottesweg, built 1913–1915 and rebuilt after being destroyed in the war. The windows by Wilhelm Buschulte are worth seeing. Joseph Frings , who later became Archbishop of Cologne, was a chaplain inthe communityfor several years.
  • To the Holy Spirit on the folding rule belt. The church was built in 1931 and had to be largely rebuilt after being almost completely destroyed in the Second World War. The new building was completed in 1957, the architect was Karl Band . A statue of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century is worth seeing;
Melanchthon Church

There is also the evangelical church named after Philipp Melanchthon at Rosenzweigpark . This is located in the middle of a Bauhaus-style settlement that was built in the 1920s . The church is also kept in this style. The Melanchthon Church is one of the first Protestant churches in Germany, which houses the church on the upper floor and a community center in the basement. It was built in 1929–1930 according to plans by Theodor Merrill . After severe war damage, the spatial concept of the church interior was changed during the reconstruction.

There has also been a small mosque on the northern Höninger Weg since 2000 .

Parks and squares

In addition to the large foothills park, there is another park, the Rosenzweig Park. Places that were designed as green spaces are the Vorgebirgsplatz , Hönninger Platz and Theophanoplatz .
