Lüen ( Romansh ) was, until 31 December 2012, a municipality in the former area of Schanfigg , district Plessur of the Swiss canton of Grisons .
On January 1, 2013, it merged with the municipalities of Calfreisen , Castiel , Langwies , Molinis , Peist and St. Peter-Pagig to form the municipality of Arosa .

geography
Lüen is located on the right, northern valley side of the Schanfigg , seven kilometers (as the crow flies) east of Chur . In a narrow strip, the former municipal area extends 750 m above sea level. M. at the valley river Plessur almost up to the ridge. The deeply cut course of the river forms the former municipal boundary for around 2 km between the mouths of the Schelmentobel and Clasaurer Tobel . The clustered village of Lüen lies on a slope above a steep, wooded section of the slope, surrounded by meadows and fruit trees. Beyond the valley road, which runs around 200 meters above the village, the territory encompasses the western flank of the Clasaurer Tobel with Maiensässen , wooded areas and the pastures on Lüener Berg . The highest point is 2217 m above sea level. M. on the south side of the Hochwangs .
9% of the former municipality area is unproductive, 52% is forested and 37% is used for agriculture. Neighboring communities were Castiel , St. Peter-Pagig , Molinis and Tschiertschen-Praden .
geology
The Schanfigg is largely built from Penninic Bündner schists. At Lüen these occur as limestone slate to pebbly limestone slate. The rock is covered with moraines and fluvio-glacial gravel.
history
Originally the village was inhabited by Rhaeto-Romans . The first documented mention of Leune (place name of unknown origin) dates from 1084, when the free Lüener donated the newly built church to the Chur bishop . In the three leagues , the place belonged as the neighborhood of the Ausserschanfigg court to the ten-court league. In 1530 Lüen joined the Reformation . At the end of the 16th century there was a transition from Romance to German.
population
The population of Lüen has been more or less stable for 150 years: 1850: 83, 2005: 79.
economy
Seven people work in agricultural businesses in Lüen, and there are two jobs in the service sector (as of 2002). The remaining residents find work outside of the former community. The Lüen hydropower plant built in 1913/14 is now operated by Arosa Energie .
traffic
Since 1914, the former community has been connected to the public transport network with the Lüen-Castiel station below the village on the Chur – Arosa railway operated by the Rhaetian Railway . From Castiel on Schanfiggerstrasse , built in 1875/77 , a narrow connecting road leads down to Lüen.

- The reformed village church was built in Romanesque style in 1084 . It was consecrated to St. Zeno and has early Gothic wall paintings from the workshop of the Waltensburg master (mid-14th century).
