The Südstadion (also Fortuna Arena ) is a football stadium with athletics track in the Cologne district ruler . It is the home ground of the regional league team SC Fortuna Köln and currently offers 11,748 seats (1,863 seats). Since the 2015/16 season, the first women's team at 1. FC Köln has also temporarily used the facility.

history

The South Stadium opened on January 15, 1978. It was built primarily to give the football clubs in the south of Cologne (such as SC Fortuna Cologne, SpVg. Arminia 09 Cologne and RSV Union 05 Cologne ) a venue that should also be suitable for the Second Bundesliga. The south stadium has a total capacity of 14,944 seats, of which 1,918 are covered seats. Due to construction and renovation measures, the full capacity cannot be used at the moment.

The capacity has now decreased slightly due to the conversion of standing room into seats in the guest area.

The entire associated Jean-Löring-Sportpark was previously known as the district sports facility Cologne-South . In 2014 the area was officially named after the long-time president of SC Fortuna Köln, Jean Löring . It includes not only the actual stadium, but also a complex with changing rooms, weight rooms and sports halls as well as two training turf and two training tennis courts. After the new construction of the Rhein-Energie-Stadium , it is Cologne's largest stadium with an athletics facility.

Users

Since it opened, the stadium has been the home ground of SC Fortuna Köln, a long-time second division soccer team. Bayer 04 Leverkusen's second team also played their home games in the 2008/09 and 2009/10 seasons in the Südstadion, as the actual home ground , the Ulrich Haberland Stadium , was not playable during the construction work on the Leverkusen Bayarena . The second team of 1. FC Köln (amateurs) had already played their regional and major league games in the Südstadion until 2005/06, while their home ground, the Franz Kremer Stadium , was being renovated. For the 2005/06 season the Südstadion was the home of the former league club PSI Yurdumspor Cologne . In the 1988/89 season, SC Viktoria Köln 04 also had to play in the Südstadion, as the local Höhenberg sports park was rebuilt.

In the 2015/16 and 2017/18 seasons , the games of 1. FC Köln in the women's Bundesliga were played in the Südstadion.

The games of the Cologne American Football Bundesliga teams Cologne Falcons and Cologne Crocodiles also took place in the Südstadion.

Transport links

The Südstadion is located almost directly at the Pohligstrasse stop on line 12 of the Cologne city railway . The nearest regional train station is Cologne Süd station, about one kilometer to the north . With the car, depending on the direction of travel, different access routes can be conveniently located due to the inner-city location.

New building plans and renovation

Since the building fabric is in need of major renovation after more than thirty years, the city of Cologne planned to replace the south stadium with a new building in the same location in the medium term. The capacity should be sufficient for the requirements of the regional league , i.e. around 5,000 to 8,000 spectators. However, the city's financial situation did not allow construction to begin soon. Instead, renovation work was carried out for the 2008/09 season and the 2009/10 season. In 2008 the grandstand was equipped with bucket seats. In addition, a separate guest area was built on the main stand. In 2009 the sanitary facilities and the floodlights were replaced. The Südstadion now meets all the criteria of the DFB again and a demolition or new construction is no longer intended. In 2012, the south stadium was renovated again for around 1.5 million euros, making it suitable for the second division. During the summer break for the 2015/16 season, the venue received underfloor heating for around 800,000 euros . Such a system is prescribed by the DFB for stadiums from the 1st Bundesliga down to the 3rd division .

Trivia

In the relegation first leg for promotion to the 3rd division between SC Fortuna Köln (then Regionalliga West) and FC Bayern Munich II (then Regionalliga Bayern) on May 28, 2014, the stadium was in a SC game for the first time in 31 years Fortuna Cologne sold out again.
