history

As in neighboring Oberhausen the Stadion Niederrhein and in Gladbeck the Vestische Kampfbahn emerged, also urged the members of VfB Bottrop , lacking even the financial resources to build its own space conditioning to create a similar sports facility the city government.

So in 1923 the construction of the stadium facility on Zimmermannstrasse began. The Arenbergische Aktiengesellschaft has leased this 4.5 hectare site to the city.

After the construction work was completed, the sports facility was inaugurated on July 19 and 20, 1924 as part of a sports festival of the Bottrop clubs and schools, handed over to the population and made available to VfB Bottrop as the strongest and oldest club in Bottrop, preferably as a sports and training facility.

After a renovation in 2004 and 2005, the stadium now has a covered grandstand and a tartan track. In 2005 the Jahnstadion was one of the venues for the World Games and in 2006 one of the venues for the World Cup for people with disabilities .

From 2012 to 2017, as well as since 2019, the second team of FC Schalke 04 plays its home games in the Regionalliga West in the Jahnstadion and in the Mondpalast Arena .
