Wilhelm Riphahn , also Riphan , (born July 25, 1889 in Cologne , † December 27, 1963 there ) was a German architect .

Life

Wilhelm Riphahn was born as the son of the building contractor Gottfried Riphahn and his wife Maria Wilhelmine, a sister of the building contractor Peter Gärtner. He first attended the building trade school in Cologne, then as an intern ( guest student ) at the Technical University of Munich , the Technical University of Dresden and the Technical University of (Berlin-) Charlottenburg - his teachers included Theodor Fischer , Carl Hocheder , Martin Dülfer and Cornelius Gurlitt .

He first worked in the Siemens construction office in Berlin and in 1912 in the office of Gebrüder Taut & Hoffmann ( Bruno Taut , Max Taut and Franz Hoffmann ) in Berlin, he was also part of the time in the office of Otho Orlando Kurz in Munich and for the city planning officer Hans Erlwein in Dresden . From 1913 Wilhelm Riphahn worked as a freelance architect in Cologne. During the First World War and from 1925 to 1931 he worked with the architect Caspar Maria Grod . In 1931, both of them erected the UFA Palace, one of the most spectacular structures of that time in Cologne, in just five months. With a seating capacity of 3,000, it was the largest cinema in West Germany. After 1945 his most important collaborators were the architects Hanns Menne and Benvenuto Bausch . Between 1945 and 1948 he was a consultant for the reconstruction of the city of Cologne. In the 40s and 50s he gave the urban development of Cologne significant impulses by giving the east-west axis (Hahnenstraße between Rudolfplatz and Neumarkt ) a city-compatible dimension and airy architecture and on Offenbachplatz with the construction of the opera , the opera terraces , of the theater and the commercial building opposite created one of the few successful and lavish ensembles of the Cologne reconstruction.

His grave is in the Melaten cemetery in Cologne . His daughter Marlene Riphahn (1922-2004) became an actress.
