Opera terraces
A commercial building and restaurant at Brüderstraße 2-4 in Cologne is known under the name of Opernterrassen .
Description and history
The two-storey pavilion was built in 1957 according to plans by the architect Wilhelm Riphahn . He is part of the opera and theater ensemble created by Riphahn .
The two-storey structure has ceramic-clad facades that are coordinated with the neighboring buildings. Towards the Brüderstraße, it has a three-part window, the frame of which has been emphasized, while on the side facing Offenbachplatz there is a glazed facade and a connecting passage to the opera house resting on pillars. There are four halls on the two floors of the building. The two levels are connected by a kind of atrium ; there is also a roof terrace. The opera terraces are more simple and block-like in design than the two neighboring buildings. They are considered an important testimony to Cologne architecture of the 1950s.
The building has been a listed building since May 19, 1989 , although the facade design is apparently not always perceived by visitors as interesting or appealing: Although the opera terraces were originally built “to send a cultural and political signal”, during the day they “only seemed to exude little charm ”and some passer-by has probably already“ walked past the inconspicuous facade ”without noticing the qualities of the venue, can be read on a page about event venues in Cologne.
While the building once housed a café and the Cafè Kranzler (Kempinski) and Mövenpick restaurant , it was mainly used as a party and dance venue until 2012.
Redevelopment
In the course of the renovation of the Opera Quarter, the tenants of the Opera Terrace, who had not paid rent for months, should have vacated the building by the end of January 2012. After this was refused, the city of Cologne filed an eviction claim , as construction work was to start on June 18, 2012. A period of three years was estimated for the renovation. After that, the opera terraces will house the advance booking offices, the small theater and, as in the past, a restaurant.
Except for the southern and eastern outer walls, the opera terraces were laid down for the renovation. The new building is called "Small House".
Since September 2016, the theater has been using the new “Small House” under the name “Outdoor venue on Offenbachplatz”. Although the "Small House" was not yet fully furnished, it was prepared for a provisional play operation at the instigation of the theater manager Stefan Bachmann in order to be present again on Offenbachplatz.
